RELEASE DATE: December 8, 2020

On December 8, 2020, Paramount Home Media will release the Blu-ray for Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. The film is described as a re-working of The Godfather III, that has been re-edited with new scenes and re-arranged music cues.

Read the official details below:

Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is an acknowledgement of Mario’s and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became The Godfather: Part III,” said Coppola. “For this version of the finale, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, shots, and music cues. With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II and I’m thankful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to revisit it.”

Coppola and his production company American Zoetrope worked from a 4K scan of the original negative to undertake a painstaking, frame-by-frame restoration of both the new Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone and the original The Godfather: Part III. In order to create the best presentation possible, Zoetrope and Paramount’s restoration team began by searching for over 50 original takes to replace lower resolution opticals in the original negative. This process took more than six months and involved sifting through 300 cartons of negative. American Zoetrope worked diligently to repair scratches, stains, and other anomalies that could not be addressed previously due to technology constraints, while enhancements were made to the original 5.1 audio mix.

The Blu-ray presentation will include the newly restored and re-edited film, an exclusive introduction by Coppola, and access to a Digital copy of the film.

Coppola’s masterful film adaptation of Puzo’s novel chronicles the rise and fall of the Corleone family and the saga is rightfully viewed as one of the greatest in cinematic history. The Godfather: Part III was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film follows Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), now in his 60s, as he seeks to free his family from crime and find a suitable successor to his empire.

  1. Scott Robinson says:

Ss long as it’s better than the original part 3 I’ll give this one a try.

  2. ‘The Godfather Coda’….someone’s clearly a fan of Takeshi Kitano’s ‘Outrage’ trilogy. 🙂

    • JJ Bona says:

Yep, and The Raid 2 (poster artwork). I’m a huge fan of The Godfather 1 and 2, but Part 3 was just…. bad, especially in comparison. So, I’m all for to see what Coppolla has in store for this cut.

  3. Aerosniff Someglue says:

I could have done it myself: Just erase all the scenes featuring the shitty actress turned hugely overrated director Sofia Coppola. And the movie becomes already much better.

    • JJ Bona says:

LOL – well, judging from the blu-ray artwork, she’s there to stay. In fact, there’s a chance she might be in it more!

      • Aerosniff Someglue says:

Then I won’t bother watching this version. Truth is, I don’t care anymore about the entire trilogy. I still think Coppola’s masterpiece is The conversation.

        • JJ Bona says:

You don’t care about Godfather 1 and 2? Blasphemy!

          • Aerosniff Someglue says:

I used to care a lot. I couldn’t care less now. That’s it. I hate The beatles, The rolling stones, Led zeppelin, Queen, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, etc. It’s not because everybody “should” love a band/movie/… that I will obey. That’s all.

    • KayKay says:

“shitty actress turned hugely overrated director Sofia Coppola”-Steady. I absolutely agree the casting of Sofia Coppola in a pivotal role was the worst case of industry nepotism until Will Smith topped it with After Earth. But she’s okay-ish as a director for me. I still like Lost In Translation while conceding Marie Antoinette was bad and probably would have liked her remake of The Beguiled more had I not seen and loved the Eastwood original . And she’s nowhere near the critical darling Wes Anderson or Noah Baumbach are.

  4. Aerosniff Someglue says:

At the same time, I don’t care anymore about this saga. Coppola’s best will always be The conversation.

  5. I don’t think Godfather III was awful. I think it got a lot right, but yeah, the casting of Sophia Coppola was….unwise. I’m curious about this new version, though. But the first two films are absolute classics in every way.

    • JJ Bona says:

Yeah… I hope there’s more to it than just a “new” beginning and a “new” end. There’s a lot going on in the middle of the film that needs some adjustments lol

  6. KayKay says:

Recommendation: Watch the Rocky IV re-tweak and the Godfather 3 re-working back to back for the complete arc of how Talia Shire morphed from docile wife and mother to hard as nails Corleone sibling:-)

    • JJ Bona says:

“Talia Shire morphed from docile wife and mother to hard as nails Corleone sibling:-)”

LOL! Good observation. You’re right. I never put two and two together. Tweak not even needed.
