Rumor has it… Chow Yun-fat to join Jackie Chan in Larry Yang’s sequel to ‘The Shadow’s Edge’?

Given the massive success of 2025’s The Shadow’s Edge, which held the No. 1 position at the China box office for four consecutive weekends, it’s no surprise that a sequel is currently in pre-production.

Last year, Larry Yang (Ride On) and Victoria Hon (Mountain Cry) – director and producer of The Shadow’s Edge, respectively – stated they were open to cash in on a sequel. “We’re considering the idea of a sequel, but right now we’re unsure what direction it will take,” Yang says. “I don’t want to repeat myself so I will very likely find a new approach. We’ll see how that goes,” Yang told Variety in 2025.

Now, word is starting to circulate that Chow Yun-fat (The Killer, Hard Boiled) may be teaming up with Jackie Chan for the sequel. The buzz comes from Hong Kong cinema insiders F. J. DeSanto and Frank Djeng, who shared the following in the Hong Kong Cinema Appreciation Society Facebook group:

“Let’s be clear this is a rumor not fact yet” – F.J. DeSanto

“I wouldn’t call it a rumor. More like an unconfirmed fact” – Frank Djeng

It would make perfect sense to do a follow up sequel showcasing another top tier Hong Kong star, especially considering that Tony Leung Ka-fai recently won the Best Actor award for his villanous role in The Shadow’s Edge at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards. In fact, the film is noted for the final face off between Chan and Leung, as stated by City on Fire’s Paul Bramhall in his review:

“The final face off between Chan and Leung probably being the most violent of both of their long careers. Those looking for intricate choreography or long uninterrupted takes are in the wrong place, but what we get in place of them is something completely different from anything we’ve seen before in a Jackie Chan movie. Both desperately trying to kill the other, it’s a scrappy and guttural brawl that takes place within the confines of a cramped teahouse, with collateral damage being the order of the day and plenty of blood spilled.”

🔥 Hot Take: If the rumors are true, this would mark the first-ever collaboration between Chow Yun-fat and Jackie Chan. It’s wild to think that two legends of Hong Kong cinema have never shared the screen, but that might finally be about to change. And who knows, maybe a bloody showdown between Chow and Chan?

The Shadow’s Edge sequel is expected to shoot by the end of 2026.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more. For now, here’s the Trailer to the original, followed by a blurb for the sequel:

I would be down for a potential sequel.

Although I would not like it to be rushed, I also don’t want the window of opportunity to go away with having Jackie Chan and Tony Leung Ka Fai back again. Also, it would be nice if Shadow’s crew got more screentime as well.

  2. Typo says:

The film had a limited theatrical U.S. release on August 22, so we anticipate a wide official U.S. release date soon.

Not sure they’ll release it again.

This could be cool but I hope they give the sequel the same love the first received so for now I’ll remain calm on it till I see the trailer.
