‘Rumble in the Bronx’ director Stanley Tong to reunite Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh for ‘Super Cop: Reborn’?

Is Hong Kong action director Stanley Tong (Rumble in the Bronx) re-teaming up with Jackie Chan (The Shadow’s Edge) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) for a 5th Police Story film?

In short, the answer leans more toward ‘yes’ than ‘no’. According to Jackie Chan historian Thorsten Boose, there are new reports and blurbs circulating Chinese language platforms, hinting that a direct follow-up to Police Story 3: Super Cop is in the works. The film is titled Super Cop: Reborn, and it’s reportedly being steered by Stanley Tong himself and approved by the China Film Administration as of Friday last week.

The official plot for Super Cop: Reborn is as follows: Retired police officer Fang Shilong reunites with his ex-wife, also a retired officer, Yang Wanting, after their daughter is kidnapped in Paris. Together, they travel across Europe to investigate a human trafficking and organ trade syndicate. After intense battles and sacrifice, they rescue their daughter from the brutal criminal organization and rediscover family bonds and justice.

Jackie Chan and Stanley Tong created magic together in a string of some of Chan’s most loved films of the 90s, including 1992’s Police Story 3: Supercop, 1995’s Rumble in the Bronx and 1996’s Police Story 4: First Strike. Their more recent collaboration include 2017’s Kung Fu Yoga, 2020’s Vanguard and 2024’s A Legend.

The pair’s collaboration history was the subject of our retrospective, Jackie Chan & Stanley Tong: Giving the People What They Want. Be sure to check it out, if you haven’t already!

🔥 Footnote: In addition to Super Cop: Reborn, a New Police Story sequel was announced for development back in 2023. The film would act as a direct sequel to to Benny Chan’s 2004 film, New Police Story. Though they share a similar title and theme (Jackie playing a cop), they are not connected to the official Police Story franchise. The same applies to 1993’s Crime Story and 2013’s Police Story: Lockdown, which were also marketed as part of the series, despite having no actual ties.

We’ll keep you updated on Super Cop: Reborn as we learn more. Until then, we leave you with the U.S. Trailer to Jackie Chan and Stanley Tong’s masterpiece:

Hopefully, this rumored film project will be an awful lot better than the recent mediocre films from both Jakcie Chan and Stanley Tong(both together and separately).

    • Typo says:

Hey Jackie, how about taking just a little time and try to find another winner bringing something new to the table?

Like, you know, The shadow’s edge (and no, The shadow’s edge 2 wouldn’t be a new meal)…

Had to check the date and make sure it wasn’t April Fool’s!

Stanley Tong used to be one of the greats, but ever since entering his Eat Pray Love era, he’s fallen off hard. It’s difficult watching the man who co-created Rumble, First Strike, Supercop, and Martial Law churn out dreck like Vanguard and Kung Fu Yoga. There’s some real quality content coming out of the Mainland these days, despite internet handwringing about censorship: films with social commentary, strong characters, big budget spectaculars, and webmovies inspired by the good ol days of HK chopsocky. Tong, on the other hand, has become the epitome of bloat, both in his personal appearance and his films.

Supercop Reborn has an interesting premise – what if old Supercop, but crossed with Taken – could have room for great acting as Michelle and Jackie’s characters have to navigate their personal history, and great action around the world. Jackie’s still got the chops, and Michelle is unbelievably at the top of her game right now in show business. Larry Yang from “The Shadow’s Edge” could do something with this premise, or Martin Campbell from “The Foreigner” and “Goldeneye”. But with Tong at the helm, this will probably be another disappointment.

This isn’t the first time COF has posted multiple articles in April that could be April Fool’s jokes. (With love!)

Like Callum states, I’ll believe it when I see cameras at work. The only way this new Supercop would succeed is if it was in the style of The Shadow’s Edge. I’m still waiting for a proper release of Stone Age Warriors.

  3. Callum says:

Much like New Police Story 2 I will believe it when I see the actual trailer or bts shots. Until then it can sit on the development hell shelf.
