  1. This is easy…

Die Hard: Flawless pacing, flawless acting, flawless storyline, flawless dialog, flawless hero, flawless villain, flawless action (especially for the time)… this movie set the foundation and standard for every action movie that came after it. Its influence can still be felt in most movies today.

    Runners up…

Road Warrior, Lethal Weapon, The Raid 2, Die Hard with A Vengeance, Police Story

    • Nagi says:

Howdy, i read your blog occasionally and i own a silamir one and i was just curious if you get a lot of spam comments? If so how do you protect against it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it’s driving me insane so any support is very much appreciated.

  2. Jeff Kerman says:

Hard Boiled. John Woo revolutionized how gunplay was used in cinema.

  3. Matthew A. says:

Once upon a time in China( the whole series), great action and comedy. To name some others Ip Man, The Raid, Die Hard, Robocop.

  4. ken lee says:

my favorite action film is The Expendables. Stallone brings in a lot of old school and new school action actors for one awesome powerhouse movie. same goes with Expendables 2.

  5. Ben says:

This is a tough one, but I’d have to say that Raid 2 is pretty high on the list. I really think it has everything: cool soundtrack, awesome fights, and an engaging storyline.

  6. Twan says:

Lethal Weapon 3 is my favorite action movie. I have a soft spot for buddy cop movies from 48 hrs to Bad Boys to Alien Nation and on to Rush Hour. Lethal Weapon 3 is the one that did it for me showing how they got each others back no matter the situation and how their lives intertwined. No one actor overshadowed the other to me as the worked seamlessly together to create a great film.

  7. Ron says:

It’s gonna have to be “Showdown In Little Tokyo”. It has 90’s all over it. The fight scenes are sweet and the pacing is great. There’s ever a dull moment. Brandon Lee steals the show.

  8. Joey says:

Under Siege. The best Steven Seagal movie ever makes it my favorite action movie

  9. Alan tan says:

So many to choose from, but the Raid series is one of my most favorites then ,there is Ong Bak,and Kiss of the Dragon with Jet Li.

  10. Michael says:

Big Trouble In Little China is my favorite. The combination of comedy and action makes it a movie I can watch over and over.

    Honorable mentions

    Die Hard
    Police Story

  11. Loch says:

The Rock. It’s Nick Cage and Michael Bay in their prime. Great set pieces.

  12. Marion says:

I haven’t watched it in a while. All I remember is that I left the theatre thinking that my heart rate wasn’t going to go down. I never expected such a movie to make me so anxious and fear taking the bus home. I don’t recall there being a lot of kissing in it either, which helps… I hate unnecessary romantic parts in action movies (hence me not thinking any of the lethal weapons would be “the best). But I’m not sure.

  13. Ann says:

Terminator. The action pretty much never stops. It’s like a 107 minute chase scene.

  14. Cullen says:

“The Last Boy Scout” would have to be my favorite, or at least a favorite, action movie. What makes this film interesting isn’t just the cleverly designed action scenes but the merging of hard boiled detective fiction and 90’s action theatrics.

  15. Rosemary says:

Iron Monkey – It’s got everything. Action by Yuen Woo Ping, Donnie Yen, bad monks, no shadow kick, Buddha’s Palm, etc. Drama and comedy. Social commentary. Miss Orchid kicking ass. I can also watch it with my son. I never get tired of it. Best.Movie.Ever.

  16. colt says:

My bad…The Return of Uncle Benon by Ramon Film Productions.
Great action! A MUST SEE for any action fan! AWESOME!!! Check out the trailer. It’s awesome too!!!

  17. Patrick says:

My favorite action movie is Hardboiled. Such a stylized and intense action/gunplay movie from beginning to end. The story had you on the edge of your seat while Chow Yun Fat started to clean up the streets or was it the hospital?!

  18. Emanuel Hawkins says:

The Raid 2…is a new classic to me..it has everything that an action movie can have without cheesy CGI..as most of everything was done practical effects. it had drama, humor, suspense and some of the most jaw dropping fights…EVER!..waiting patiently for part 3….

  19. Daniel Gegner says:

Enter the Dragon – because Bruce Lee is the granddaddy.

  20. Andy says:

I’ll keep it short: The Raid 2: Berandal. Hands down the best action movie I’ve seen in a long time, and best sequel ever. Love everything about it: the acting, the characters are interesting, and of course the action! The fight scenes are just incredible, there are like 19 in total. No other movie come close. Period. Just watch this.

  21. Travis E. says:

So many action movies….I guess for me it’s gotta be Terminator 2. This one blew me away when I first saw it. I’ve probably seen it a hundred times since. What can I say? Characters, check. Major action set pieces, check. Snappy script, check. Everything worked.

Close second: Aliens. Grew up loving this one too.

  22. Miko says:

Terminator 2. It’s just bad ass

  23. Mo says:

Like many others here, John Woo’s “Hard-Boiled” is at the top of the list. Chow Yun Fat’s Tequila is cooler than cool, Tony Leung’s layered performance is top notch and the action set pieces are (still) awesome. When there were still VHS rental stores, I would rent the movie almost every weekend. In my teens,I had never seen anything like it, and to me, it’s the grandaddy of how-to-action. I’ve probably purchased almost every available format of the film, and the original poster is on display in my living room. In terms of scope, there are very few action films that can match it (and I really believe that films like “The Raid” owe a lot to it).

  24. Justin Murillo says:

Gladiator. It has a martial art movie setup in a different setting. The story is also dope.

  25. Jay says:

Mine is probably Police Story. I could watch the last 10 minutes over and over again.

  26. David says:

Supercop is my favorite because it’s full of action and laughs.

  27. Nick EML says:

Favorite action movie, that is real tough. I’m going to say…The Transporter. Jason Statham is just a badass. He does hand to hand fights, weapons, car driving, guns, car jumping stunts, it is just action all over the place. Such a fun movie.

  28. Justin Bishop says:

So many good action movies to choose from, but I am going to say Universal Soldier. In my opinion this is JCVD’s best. Also, you get Dolph as an insane super soldier. It’s pretty much everything you could ask for from an old school action movie.

  29. Sito says:

Favorite Action Movie : Die Hard !!!

  30. Igor Godinez says:

Mine would be “flash point” with mr. Donnie Yen, this HK movie is martial arts at its best. Its also incorporates MMA style fighting that works well in the contemporary world of fighting now a days. The stunts & martial arts are on point and Yen was awesome (as always) with a great no holds bar action movie!

  31. dan says:

Enter the Dragon – why? Because it stars Bruce lee that’s why.

  32. George Stone says:

It’s gotta be Enter The Dragon. No other reason than Bruce Lee kicks ass in it.

  33. Eric says:

This is like telling someone to pick their favorite child! Everyone has listed great ones so far. The Crow is my favorite movie and while it’s not purely an action movie, I think it qualifies. Brandon Lee was amazing in it. Great story, sets, atmosphere, and music. Still my favorite soundtrack.

  34. American Ninja Man says:

My vote goes actually to The Terminator. All of it done on a low budget and it has everything.

Runners up would include A Better Tomorrow, Road Warrior, Rambo, Die Hard, The Matrix, Once Upon A Time In The West, Hard Boiled, Full Contact (let’s face it CYF made more classics than anybody ever did) and Total Recall. I would include all of those as best, although to be fair Big Boss, Police Story and Universal Soldier would be more in the martial arts range.

I guess martial arts I would include

    1. Big Boss
    2. Police Story series
    3. Universal Soldier series (excluding The Return and any sequels without Van Damme)
    4. Ong Bak
    5. Kickboxer 1 (Though if i’m honest, I really dig 2 and 4 as well)
    6.King Of The Kickboxers
    7. Righting Wrongs
    8. Tai Chi Master
    9. Crippled Avengers
10.Fist Of The White Lotus. Those would be my top ten.

Honorable mentions though? The Streetfighter, Five Deadly Venoms, Five Element Ninjas,Chinatown Kid, Dragons Forever, Wheels On Meals, Once Upon A Time In China 1-2, Bloodsport and for sheer guilty pleasure American Ninja 1-2.

  35. Devin says:

The Avengers, Non-stop action fun characters and humor make this movie very re-watchable I just love it!

  36. Chad Harry says:

Enter The Dragon…. I mean it’s just a pure fun and very fulfilling film. Bruce Lee shines like a bright star in this film. It’s colorful and the action scenes are still championed till this day. Flawless

  37. Sonder says:

Double Impact. It’s double the action, double the adventure and double the Van Damage. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

But yeah, I can never get tired of this movie.

  38. Kyle Warner says:

Die Hard. It’s the best. The hero bleeds and suffers. The villain is bad but he’s not one-dimensional. High stakes, some laughs, and tension that you can feel. It’s great.
