During the Eighties and Nineties, American Albert Pyun had an impressive run of films that, while not exactly considered classics, did manage to develop a cult following among genre movie lovers. Such films include 1989’s Cyborg, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme in post-apocalyptic sci-fi mode; 1990’s low, low-budget rendering of Marvel Comics’ superhero Captain America; the 1992 cyber-punk thriller Nemesis, which many consider to be Pyun’s finest hour; and the 1997 pairing of Christopher Lambert and Ice-T in Mean Guns.
Unfortunately, it appears that Albert Pyun’s career is coming to a temporary end due to health issues. The filmmaker, who has a constant rapport with both his fans and detractors online, took to Facebook to announce his retirement.
Cityonfire.com wishes Pyun and the family the best in this difficult time. Hopefully with some rest and recuperation, Pyun can return to the world of genre cinema.
Thanks for all the movies Albert, take care. It is better you don’t make a Cyborg sequel anyway, the original is now a Van Damme classic.
Cyborg Nemesis will be his last movie. Anyway the guy put out some watchable work Kickboxer 2 and 4, Cyborg, Nemesis, Bloodmatch, Mean Guns and The Sword and The Sorcerer. Unfortunately he stopped being interesting 10 years ago but here’s hoping he goes out with a bang, and it’s only fitting his last movie be a post apocalypse flick. It’s too bad because his B.movies were often awful but amusingly so (Knights is hilarious.) Anyway good luck Al.
