RELEASE DATE: June 21, 2022

On June 21, 2022, Well Go USA is releasing the Blu-ray for Li Xijie Adam and Zhang Zhulin’s martial arts actioner, Ip Man: The Awakening.

Ip Man: The Awakening stars Xie Miao (the little kid from Jet Li’s The New Legend of Shaolin and My Father is a Hero), who steps into the role made famous by Donnie Yen. Co-stars include Hou Tongjiang, Hua Qilong, Chen Guanying and Zhao Yuxuan.

While visiting Hong Kong, a young Master Ip (Xie Miao) intervenes in a kidnapping attempt, unintentionally igniting a turf war with a ruthless human trafficking ring. In retaliation, the gang kidnaps one of Ip Man’s close friends, leaving him with no choice but to challenge the group’s notoriously brutal boxing champion head-on. Read on for the details.

The film is also streaming on Hi-YAH!, Well Go USA’s very own Asian/martial arts streaming channel. If you want to give Hi-YAH! a go, visitors of this site can use the promo code “CITYONFIRE” for a FREE 30 Day trial!

  1. Andrew Hernandez says:

I watched this Hiyah, and it was decent. Much better than the fake Ip Man movies like Four Kings, Kung Fu Master and Crisis Time.

Xie Miao is definitely grown up and has what it takes to convincingly portray Ip Man. His moves are very on point and there’s good choreography at hand. The makers of the film must hate Bartitsu though as the British hybrid martial art is portrayed as being sloppy and nothing like in the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movies. (Which may have been more Wing Chun as Robert Downey Jr is a practitioner.)

There’s a decent fight between Xie Miao and the villain’s right hand man towards the end although it borrows a bit from the first 2 Donnie Yen films with its setting. The fight with the villain though is pathetic as he’s portrayed as a little bitch who’s made short work of.

All in all, the movie is a fair way to kill 80 minutes.
