Simon Lui Yue-Yeung, the Hong Kong actor, television host, writer and filmmaker best known for his work in the Troublesome Night horror series, has passed away at the age of 62, due to stomach cancer.
Born on July 8, 1964, Lui began his entertainment career after graduating from TVB’s artist training program in 1988. He initially appeared in television dramas and variety programs before making the move to the Hong Kong film industry, where he quickly became a familiar face to fans of the city’s horror and comedy movies.
Lui became particularly well known for his appearances in the long running Troublesome Night series, appearing in numerous installments throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. He also appeared in a wide range of Hong Kong films, including 97 Aces Go Places, Super Car Criminals, Vulgaria, Paris Holiday, and numerous other productions.
Beyond acting, Lui was also active behind the scenes as a writer, producer and director. He wrote the screenplay for Last Ghost Standing and directed Escape from Hong Kong Island, while also working on several other film projects throughout his career. He was also a familiar presence on Hong Kong television and radio, hosting programs including The Unbelievable, where his interest in supernatural stories became closely associated with his public persona.
Lui leaves behind a career that spanned more than three decades and included television, radio, film and filmmaking. He will be remembered by Hong Kong cinema fans particularly for his prolific work during the golden era of the territory’s horror and comedy productions.
