"I Saw the Devil" Theatrical Poster
THE MOVIE: Producers Adi Shankar (Dredd) and Spencer Silna (Escape Plan) have acquired English language remake rights to Kim Jee Woon’s I Saw the Devil, which is widely regarded as the most violent and elaborate revenge story ever told onscreen.
Shankar says, “Kim Jee Woon’s I Saw the Devil is perfect in so many ways. The intention is not to remake the film per say but rather to ‘port’ it console style for international audiences.”

Updates: According to Collider, director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett – the duo responsible for directing and writing both You’re Next and The Guest, respectively – have been hired to direct/write the English language remake of I Saw the Devil.

I Saw The Devil is a masterpiece! Choi Min-sik turns in a terrifyingly brilliant performance as the sadistic maniac Kyung-chul. Lee Byung-hun, in his career best as the secret agent
Kim Soo-hyeon who intends to keep his promise to his viciously murdered fiancee’. This is not a typical revenge film, it’s not typical in any way. Without the skills of Kim Jee-woon the movie could have wavered in the intensity and determination to see the story through to the end.
Shankar has it partially right, I Saw The Devil is perfect and is also already entertaining international audiences, including American.
It would have made more sense if they put more money into the marketing of the original and gave it a real theatrical release (I think Magnet had a limited theatrical release… limited!)… But then again, the average American “movie-goer” doesn’t like to read subtitles, so it would have failed financially, which explains the English remake. And it’s not one of those movies that you’d want to English dub like Rumble in the Bronx.
I thought YOU’RE NEXT was one heck of a movie until the “twist”…. then I lost interest. I think this is why THE STRANGERS worked so well. There was no twist, no rhyme or reason.
I can’t see an English remake being any good. It’ll be too watered down. Hell, depending on who picks it up, they might try to make it PG-13.
