Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao and more! Star-studded Hong Kong epic ‘1941’ in the works for a 2027 release?

Get ready, because this next bit of news almost feels like an Avengers-moment for the entire Hong Kong action cinema industry!

The Hong Kong Stuntman Association is developing a star-studded historical film to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China, with a planned release in 2027.

Directors Chin Kar-Lok (Golden Job) and Hai Huang (China Salesman) plan to helm the Hong Kong-China co-production under the working title 1941 (aka Nineteen Forty-One). In addition to directing, Chin will also take on action choreography duties.

According to Jackie Chan historian Thorsten Boose, the story focuses on Hong Kong under Japanese occupation in 1941. The script is likely still unfinished, so the specific plot remains unknown. The film is supposed to be shot in both Mandarin and Cantonese.

1941 will feature an ensemble cast that includes Louis Koo (Back to the Past), Nick Cheung (Bursting Point), Daniel Wu (Caught in Time), and Charmaine Sheh (Golden Job).

And the potential star power doesn’t stop there. Other rumored names include Jackie Chan (The Shadow’s Edge), Sammo Hung (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In), Yuen Biao (Operation Bangkok), Jet Li (Blades of the Guardians), Donnie Yen (The Prosecutor), Wu Jing (Wandering Earth II), Chow Yun-fat (Project Gutenberg), Francis Ng (Customs Frontline) and Anita Yuen (Integrity).

🔥 Footnote: Even with that massive list of star power, three particular names stand out: Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. If the film is made, it would be the first movie to reunite the “Three Brothers” since 1988’s Dragons Forever.

We’ll keep you updated on this potential project as we learn more. Until then, here’s the promotional poster and shot from the recent press event (via Thorsten Boose):
