“Purgatory: Zone of Murderers” Theatrical Poster
Martial artist, actor and stuntman Bruce Khan, best known for starring in 2018’s Revenger and co-starring in 2022’s The Killer, is gearing up for the release of Purgatory: Kill Zone (aka Purgatory: Zone of Murderers), an upcoming action thriller he co-directs with Jonathan Hyun Myoung Lee.
As Khan did with Revenger, he’s also choreographing the action for Purgatory: Kill Zone, which is essentially a prison flick with martial arts action.
Set in a dystopian near future, Purgatory: Kill Zone unfolds inside a brutal detention facility where the government has locked away its most dangerous death-row convicts. When the inmates seize control of the prison, a former cop serving time behind bars is given one shot at freedom: eliminate the ruthless leader and earn his pardon.
The film also stars Lee Chae-young (Tik Tok), Kim Jae-hyun (The Ghost Station), Cho Sung-ha (The Suspect), Park Chul-min (The Villainess), Jo Jae-yoon (Inside Men) and Ye Soo-jung (Train to Busan).
🔥 Footnote: If you haven’t heard of Bruce Khan, it’s entirely forgivable. A master of Taekwondo and Hapkido, Khan entered the Korean film industry in the late ’90s, just as Shiri had seemingly put the final nail in the coffin of Korean martial arts movies. A connection in Hong Kong led to a small action role in Gen-X Cops, and Khan would later work on the fight choreography for Jackie Chan’s The Medallion. After establishing martial arts schools in both the U.S. and Korea, he finally stepped in front of the camera in 2005’s The Last Eve, followed by a memorable role as a Japanese villain in the 2012 K-drama Bridal Mask. But Khan’s real ambition was always to make a pure Korean martial arts movie. With Revenger, he finally realized that dream.
Purgatory: Kill Zone opens in South Korea on September 9 from Greenfish Studios and Khan Films. We’re hoping for a U.S. date soon.
