Failan | Blu-ray (Whole Grain Pictures)
On November 10, 2026, Whole Grain Pictures will release Failan on Blu-ray (Region A). This acclaimed 2001 gritty melodrama comes from director Song Hae-Seong, who is perhaps best known for his 2010 remake of John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow.
Kang-kae’s a gangster (Choi Min-sik, Old Boy), but he’s just too nice to be all that successful at it. When his boss commits a murder, it’s Kang-kae who is picked to take the fall for the crime. Failan (Cecilia Cheung, Shaolin Soccer) is a young girl who comes to Korea following the death of her parents, only to find that the aunt she was supposed to stay with has left the country. She wants a job, but needs an extended residence permit. What starts as a marriage of convenience becomes an unforgettable story of connection, longing, and distance.

🔥 Footnote: Failan is based on the Japanese short story “Love Letter” by Jirō Asada, which follows a washed-up yakuza gangster who receives a posthumous letter from a mail-order bride he never truly knew.
