On January 30, 2026, Well Go USA is releasing Ng Yuen-fai and Jack Lai’s Back to the Past to U.S. audiences. The sci-fi actioner is the long-awaited “movie” sequel to the television series, A Step into the Past.

Back to the Past is headlined by the series’ original stars, Louis Koo (Death Notice) and Raymond Lam (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In).

The 2001 television series, based on Huang Yi’s novel The Chronicles of Searching Qin, centered around a 21st-century VIPPU special agent (Koo) who gets entangled in a time traveling experiment.

Back to the Past picks up nineteen years after the end of A Step into the Past. After two decades of peaceful solitude, Hong Siu-lung (Koo) is drawn back to the Qin Dynasty when the six states – long united under Emperor Ying Ching (Lam) – are threatened by a time-traveling adversary, fueled by revenge over his wrongful imprisonment. The past and present collide as Hong Siu-lung and the Emperor battle threats, both new and familiar, to protect the empire and the future itself.

Co-stars (some returning from the TV series as well) include Jessica Hsuan (A Witness Out of the Blue), Sonija Kwok (The Sorcerer and the White Snake), Joyce Tang (72 Tenants of Prosperity), Michelle Saram (Paradox) and features martial arts choreography by Sammo Hung (Eastern Condors).

  1. Phil Chan says:

One of the very first TV dramas I remember watching. They seem to have gotten a lot of the original cast back too so this would be a good nostalgia trip for those fans.

  2. Aerosniff Someglue says:

“The film features martial arts choreography by Sammo Hung”

Really? I haven’t seen one second of a fight during that (not teasing at all) teaser.
