John Wick, move over! On April 5, 2024, Universal is releasing Dev Patel’s (Slumdog Millionaire) martial arts-infused action thriller, Monkey Man (read our review), a Jordan Peele-produced film that Patel not only directs, but stars in.

In the film, a recently released ex-felon (Patel) living in India struggles to adjust to a world of corporate greed and eroding spiritual values.

Monkey Man also stars Sharlto Copley (Hardcore Henry), Pitobash Vipin (Mirch), Sharma Sikandar Kher (Contract), Sobhita Dhulipala (Major) and Ashwini Kalsekar (Fu Bai Fu).

And also watch out for fight choreography by Brahim Chab (Vanguard), who is perhaps best known for his stunt/choreography work in such films as Pound of Flesh, Tekken: Kazuya’s Revenge and The Driver.

Oh man! I remember when this was announced before the pandemic! I was hoping it wouldn’t end up on the chopping block!

Before people starting throwing “John Wick” everywhere, this one seems to have a different pathetic as Dev Patel is motivated to protect less fortunate people instead of revenge. There’s certainly the “class warfare” angle, and it looks like even though his character is a skilled fighter, he’s not a professional killer, and won’t be cutting through everybody so seamlessly.

Dev Patel was a martial arts practitioner before this film, so I hope this is a good chance for him to show off his skills. Brahim Chab is a great addition as action director. Even though he was great in Undisputed 4, and wish he had more roles like that, I hope this is a better project for his fight choreography than the shitty DTV stuff he’s saddled with.

he dresses like Wick but this has a Tony jaa loves elephants vibe as well. Cabt wait fir this websites favourute Jihn Wick anti John Woo fan to chime in with his opinion

      • Andrew Hernandez says:

        Don’t encourage him!

I’m a huge John Wick fan, and one thing that I’m happy about is that other film makers are influenced by those films without copying them. Just like Beekeeper and Silent Night, Monkey Man is upping its game by using its own style but at the same level as 87North’s output.

    • Brahim Chab says:

Thank you very much. I’m sure people won’t be disappointed by what we did with my team.

  2. Kiril Valkov says:

Interesting, trailer looked good, and in certain scenes gave me Ong Bak vibes, let us hope that the full movie will deliver as good as the trailer.

  3. Ningen says:

Someone’s pissed that no one saw Polite Society.

  4. Ulric says:

Musti Yuddha is the Striking art of Hanuman. The Thai equivalent as we should know is Muay Thai

  5. Ulric says:

Btw this looks amazing and I am excited for it

    • Scott Robinson says:

      this looks amazing? explain please.

      • Ulric says:

Explain why it looks amazing. Well for one the action and storyline are intriguing. Look I don’t owe an explanation for anything. If you disagree or agree whatever. Last time I said a movie looked amazing it was so I really don’t care what your opinion is

  6. Andrew Hernandez says:

    Monkey Man was golden!

There are several layers to this film which make it good. Dev Patel was not jumping on the John Wick bandwagon, and has wanted to do this movie for many years. In interviews, he talked about how of course, Bruce Lee films and The Raid were influential, but also cited Korean thrillers like Oldboy, The Man From Nowhere, and A Bittersweet Life.

What we have here is the result of a guy who loves the above films, and made something in line with them without copying them. The Hindu Mythology aspect is very much in tune with how Hong Kong films would reference Chinese Mythology when it comes to a hero rising to the occasion and protecting the innocent.

There’s the class warfare element where the people in power not only refuse everyone else help, but go out of their way to exploit them and make sure the crime and poverty rates remain high to keep them in check. There’s several villains in Monkey Man who represent false prophets and their underlings who will do anything to stay in power.

The trailer makes the film look like it’s going to be all action, and while we do get some moments including the intense escape sequence, most of the action is reserved for the finale. This works in the movie’s favor as up to that point, all the villains have been showcased to where their imminent punishment will be cathartic.

I am glad that everything worked out for Monkey Man.

    • Scott Robinson says:

Patel can say whatever the hell he wants about not jumping on the John Wick bandwagon, but it’s pretty clear that he wouldn’t be able to get proper funding for this film of this type if John Wick didn’t pave the way. He has to nod to John Wick whether he likes it or not!

      • Andrew Hernandez says:

He did give credit where it was due to the franchise and 87 North, and they were going to produce the film before the worldwide lockdown. It doesn’t make what Patel said untrue.

The John Wick influence wasn’t lost on Patel as he even befriends a dog in the movie and it thankfully doesn’t become the plot. Just friendly reference.
