In the mood for another storm? Just like David Lam’s ongoing collection of Storm films (Z-StormS-Storm, L-Storm, P Storm and G Storm), the other Storm franchise continues to run wild with a third film titled The White Storm 3: Heaven or Hell.

For the upcoming The White Storm 3: Heaven or Hell (read our review), Herman Yau (Nessun Dorma) is once again at the helm, while Lau Ching-Wan (A Hero Never Dies), Louis Koo (Paradox) and, new-to-the-franchise star, Aaron Kwok (Project Gutenberg), are leading the show.

In 2019’s The White Storm 2: Drug Lords, Yau (Shock Wave) took over directing duties for Benny Chan – with Andy Lau (The Adventurers) headlining with returning star, Louis Koo (Paradox).

The first film (read our review), starred Koo as a narcotics detective hot on the trail of a new drug kingpin (Nick Cheung), who may or may not be a former cop that everyone believes is dead.

  1. Happy to hear about Herman Yau and Andy Lau teaming up for this one (Koo is a given, he’s in everythnig!). I’m sure it’ll blow the first one out of the water (and I’d be equally happy if this is a completely unrelated sequel), which shouldn’t be too hard to do. For me ‘The White Storm’ is the ‘Kung Fu Yoga’ of the heroic bloodshed genre – an embarrassing mess.

  2. Jerry Johnson says:

hmmm the action in the trailer looks like it was filmed for a tv series. It doesn’t have that “film” look to it. Hopefully the final product turns out better.

  3. Aerosniff Someglue says:

Well… I like Herman Yau’s latest movies… well, the ones I’ve seen: his two Ip man (yes, sir), The woman knight of Mirror Lake (really cool action scenes in this one) and Shock wave. Oh, and he co directed Stephen Chow’s best movie since Kung fu hustle (not that I didn’t like the others!) , The new king of comedy. But the first White storm was such a crap that… Well… And Louis Koo is only good by chance, so I’m not in a hurry here…

    • I find Yau’s latest movies to be hit or miss. I loved ‘The New King of Comedy’ as well, but ‘The Leakers’, his last crack at an action thriller, was so terminally dull I couldn’t muster up the energy to write even a single sentence about it. Fingers crossed for this one.

  4. Phil Chan says:

Chasing the Dragon II this month, The White Storm 2 next month and Line Walker 2 the month after. All starring Louis Koo. I like the guy and admire his work ethic but surely he’s working himself to death at this point. Poor bastard never seems to have a break that lasts more than three months, other than when it’s forced upon him due to injury.

    • Andrew Hernandez says:

I like the guy, but I do think that he’s “overexposed.” I imagine his biggest fans love that. Mike Leeder says good things about Louis, and it certainly can’t be argued that he doesn’t work hard.

  5. Andrew Hernandez says:

I like these new trailers. It seems like this doesn’t have anything to do with the previous film. I haven’t watched White Storm, and Paul’s review was enough to convince me not to.

    • JJ Bona says:

Might be one of those rare cases where the “sequel/related” film is better than the failed original. I can’t think of a time when this has happened. Probably Memento Mori (when compared to the first film, Whispering Corridors). But that’s reach! I mean, this has to be somewhat of a big deal. Even Andy Lau decided to dip in (and I’m sure he’s seen the first film).

      • Andrew Hernandez says:

Well there is Wolf Warrior 2 which is a million times better than the original, and Angel Terminators 2 was definitely superior to the first. Guyver: Dark Hero and Star Trek 2 are also better than their boring originals.

        • Aerosniff Someglue says:

I love the first Star Trek, and what a masterpiece of a score by Jerry Goldsmith. Can’t stand the second one, with its laughable bad guy (an old fart trying to inspire Michael Jackson for the future BAD…).

    • To give credit where credits due, it was Zack who reviewed ‘The White Storm’, I just weighed in with a comment.

      • Andrew Hernandez says:

Oh yes, I didn’t mean to pass Zack up, but I saw your blurb before reading his review and noticed that you hated it more.

I appreciated his diplomatic approach with White Storm, but based on the description and clips of the film, I knew I wasn’t going to have a good time.

  6. Mike Retter says:

White Storm? I thought they closed that website down ….

  7. Aerosniff Someglue says:

OK, count me in. That trailer alone is better that the crappy first movie.

  8. kami says:

Just a little side note, a trilogy of four movies isn’t a trilogy anymore (in regard to the mentioned “Storm” trilogy)

  9. Phil Chan says:

The White Storm 2 got chosen as the closing film for this year’s New York Asian Film Festival so it’s a chance for US audiences to catch it out there if they want.

  10. Andrew Hernandez says:

White Storm 2 came to my town, and I checked it out. At first I thought the movie was just OK, but then it got increasingly sloppy as it neared the finale.

Coincidently, White Storm 1 is legally available on YouTube for free with ads. I could only get through half of that movie before determining that the characters were all useless. As for the unrelated sequel, it’s well made and the acting is much better, but it simply has no focus.

The film jumps from being a Chasing the Dragon type crime drama, then an anti drug PSA, and more cringe inducing, a Rodrigo Duterte ass kissing campaign ad. (Especially when China is helping the authorities in the Philippines.)

Andy Lau and Louis Koo stay away from the action for a majority of the film, leaving those scenes to be taken up by underdeveloped cops led by Michael Miu against random henchmen. It’s realistic since the Andy and Louis have to keep up the facade of being legitimate businessmen, but it’s still disappointing for those who want to see them shoot it out.

Despite the NRTA having their presence known, there’s hypocrisy on their part when one of the cops carelessly shoots and kills a nurse during a gunfight, and not only is he not punished for it, he has no remorse for his recklessness.

The movie tries to push its morals, but they all contradict each other. One moment, the movie is about punishing all drug dealers at any cost, but then it backpedals and says the war is useless. Which is it?

There’s several scenes that have characters dangle from the edge of a building before they dramatically fall and hit the pavement with a blood splatter. The first time it was harsh, but after the fifth it got ridiculous that they were all dying the same way.

The action moves away from Heroic Bloodshed dynamics in favor of tactical styled shootouts, but the finale which finally involves Andy and Louis goes overboard when they try to re-create the car joust sequence in Bullet in the Head, only for it to be ruined by dodgy CGI and having them stupidly cause a disaster at the train station. It’s not like Herman Yau to ape Michael Bay.

In summation, White Storm 2 is a typical NRTA movie that should satisfy their fans, but people who actually enjoy real movies aren’t going to have a good time.

    • Phil Chan says:

Sounds like Herman Yau’s last few movies for me: too frenetic with not enough focus to get its points across to the audience. At least the acting seems solid, from what you’ve seen.

      • Andrew Hernandez says:

I haven’t seen all his latest, and I hear that New King of Comedy was pretty good, but the modern standards I hold him to are his Ip Man movies and The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake. They went from point A to B without overwritten and convoluted scripts, and that’s only one of Drug Lord’s many problems.

This seems like more of an entry for that damned Letter Storm series.

  11. Phil Chan says:

Louis Koo filming so many ‘Storm’ movies that he’s gonna have trouble ‘weathering’ it all.

Seriously though this is not exactly a series that needs another movie, even though I know the last one did extremely well in the box office. I’m still waiting for Koo’s ‘Warriors of Future’ sci-fi flick; at the very least it’d be something different from the usual cops n’ robbers stuff that almost all of the big name Hong Kong actors churn out these past few years.

    • JJ Bona says:

“Louis Koo filming so many ‘Storm’ movies that he’s gonna have trouble ‘weathering’ it all.”

LOL Come to think of it, whatever happened to the 3rd Storm Riders film?

      • Phil Chan says:

I don’t think it’s started production yet. No new information has been revealed other than Louis Koo being cast in it and his One Cool Film company being part of production and with the HK film industry being affected by protests and now the coronavirus this past year, it’ll probably take some time before new developments come through.

  12. Aerosniff Someglue says:

The woman knight of mirror lake, very cool movie, excellent action scenes. I loved The new king of comedy, I liked the Ip Man with Anthony Wong (brilliant acting) a lot, my 2nd favourite Ip Man behind the first, the other one was enjoyable too.

  13. Phil Chan says:

Apparently been confirmed today that shooting for White Storm 3 will start soon with Louis Koo, Lau Ching-Wan and Aaron Kwok. Koo might be setting a Guinness record for number of movies starred in with the word Storm in it.

  15. Andrew Hernandez says:

We’ll see! Decent trailer, but it could be deceiving! After the first movie was a fake heroic bloodshed flick, and the second was an alphabet storm aping NRTA fest, it would be nice to have something decent.
