“Armour of God” has never been my favorite Jackie Chan series (maybe cause I’ve only seen them dubbed), but I still find myself extremely excited about the prospect of “Armour of God III.” I know Stanley Tong has his haters but I’m excited to see him working with Jackie again. Together they’ve made some of my favorite action movies of all time.

  2. You know, as long as Stanley Tong is working with Jackie (who I assume has some creative control), the films are pretty good. Police Story III is just classic. Rumble in the Bronx and First Strike were enjoyable, despite their lack of “end fights”… then you look at stuff like China Strike Force…. ugh. As far as AOG flicks, always enjoyed them. I can see why some are turned off by them, especially the first one (there is a long period of time where nothing is happening), but I recently re-watched “Operation Condor” and was just blown away by it. And yes, this was the english dubbed one on netflix.

    • HKFanatic says:

Ha ha, I just rewatched China Strike Force a few nights ago. I hadn’t seen it in YEARS, not since I was obsessed with Mark Dacascos in his “Drive” days. I remembered it being alright but, wow, China Strike Force is a stinker. It’s probably one of the worst movies to ever star Chinese people, ha ha.

I like how they’re bringing up Rush Hour when it bombed in Hong Kong.

  4. D.Z. says:

    Last? Wasn’t he supposed to do a sequel to Forbidden Kingdom? ;-;

    • HKFanatic says:

Yeah, I guess there’s just the sense that this might be Jackie Chan’s last action blockbuster set in modern times, and as he says “I think I won’t fight so fiercely as this in the future.”

Oh well there’s always yuen biao, sammo, donnie,Wu jing, fan siu wong

  7. ActionJackson says:

Jackie Chan put his time in and he’s done tons of films. He’s getting older now and easier for him to get injured than before. It’s time to start brining in new blood because all those old legends won’t be around for much longer, especially how fast time flies.

    • HKFanatic says:

At least with CZ12/Chinese Zodiac, I feel like Jackie Chan is gonna go out with a bang. They’ve spent so much money and traveled around the world to make this movie, I’m expecting a ton of cool fight scenes and breath-taking stunts. Plus, Jackie’s previous collaborations with Stanley Tong are some of my favorite Jackie Chan movies ever.

  8. EvilDollaR says:

Yeah, breathtaking stunts with wires & stuntdoubles (& CGI)…

  9. ActionJackson says:

The world has always been violent Jackie we just see more of it thanks to the internet and social media. We need more movies of Jackie fighting, passing on this style and genre to others. Jackie should keep killing the bad guy as always, no need to retire so young.

  10. pingu305 says:

Shut the fuck up Jackie and drink some tea.

Jimmy Wang, beardy,Bruce Leung,Lo Meng, and Chen Kwan Tai still make action movies and they’re senior citizens

  11. All I gotta say is GO JACKIE!

I would really like to see him finish off his career with another Police Story film as well.

  12. ActionJackson says:

This marks the end of an era with Jackie retiring from action films. The movie looks cool, and I’ll see it for sure but with Jacke Chan gone the world will feel strange and awkward.

  13. Ningen31 says:

If Jackie Chan let someone else write his scripts for dramatic films instead of turning them into vanity projects like Gorgeous and Miracles, I’d probably be ok with him shifting away from action.

  14. ActionJackson says:

At a Cannes press conference to hype up his latest movie — globe-spanning treasure-hunting caper Chinese Zodiac — Jackie Chan announced that he’s done with bone-crunching action for good, but added, “In the future I’ll still do Karate Kid 2, Rush Hour 4…”

This statement, combined with the fact that Rush Hour director Brett Ratner flew into France to help his buddy promote Chinese Zodiac, got us wondering whether the fourquel is actually already underway. But when Empire sat down with Chan after the press conference, he made it clear that he won’t be re-uniting with Chris Tucker any time soon.

“No, no, no! I don’t want it to happen at this moment,” he announced, shaking his head furiously. “Probably another five or ten years. Then will be Rush Hour 4 – boom, we’re coming back! And at that time I might retire. Us being old guys might make it a more interesting story. But at this moment I don’t think it’s something I want to do.”

So there you go. Those keen for more culture-clash carnage may have to wait until 2022, by which time it could be less Rush Hour, more Trudge Hour…

  15. ActionJackson says:

Jackie is not retiring from Action movies. Jackie states below…

“Yesterday in my press conference in Cannes for Chinese 12 Zodiac I said that this movie was my last big action movie. Today I was shocked when I woke up to read all the news coverage that I was retiring from doing Action movies. I just want to let everyone know that I am not retiring from doing action movies. What I meant to say is that I need to do less of the life risking stunts on my movies. After all these years of doing so many stunts and breaking so many bones, I need to take better care of my body so I can keep working.

I will continue to do international action movies.

And I will keep improving my English 🙂

    I love all of you!

    Jackie”

    Here’s our original story:

It was bound to happen one day, but it’s sad news nonetheless; Jackie Chan has announced his decision to retire from action movies. Whilst at the Cannes Film Festival the action legend was publicising his latest movie Chinese Zodiac and stated that he has begun to feel “really, really tired”, which is hardly as surprise given just how far he’s pushed himself over the years for the enjoyment of his audience.

He went on to say: “This is my last action film, I tell you, I’m not young any more. I’m really, really tired and the world is too violent right now. It’s a dilemma – I like action but I don’t like violence. For the last 10 years I have been making some other different movies. I want to be an Asian Robert De Niro. I don’t just want to be an action star, I want to be a true actor. I want to get rid of my image.”

“I want the audience to know I’m not only a comedian. I can act. Day by day, year by year, I’m going to show you the real Jackie Chan.”

Chan’s career began in the 1960s and Chinese Zodiac marks his 100th film, the vast majority of which saw him push his body to its limit.

Brett Ratner, who directed the Rush Hour trilogy, had the following to say about Chan: “Jackie is superhuman. He does things that no actor would ever do. In Hollywood we would do a green screen and put the actors on wires and pretend they were in the sky. Jackie does it for real. No other actor, I don’t care who they are, can do what Jackie Chan can do.”

Jackie Chan is a remarkable talent and a great asset to the movie industry. And, with thanks for the many action moments of joy he’s given us over the years, we wish him well in his future movies

  16. Aidy says:

It was nice seeing him in movies all these years, providing all sorts of action and I’ve always liked his sense of humor. ‘Who Am I’ was quite funny! I think it’d be nice to look back and finally watch the first Armour of God since I’ve heard some good stuff about it. In short, many people will miss him in films, I being one!

  17. “What I meant to say is that I need to do less of the life risking stunts on my movies. After all these years of doing so many stunts and breaking so many bones, I need to take better care of my body so I can keep working.”

So, in other words, nothing hasn’t changed from 1998. =D It’s good to hear that he’ll still be making movies. Shinjuku Incident is one of his best movies, yet he doesn’t have one single martial arts scene.

  18. Ningen31 says:

“This is the first time a Chinese film has ever been presented at the Con. ”

Well, legally, anyway. =p Though I recall a friend of mine who met Stephen Chow in person, when he was promoting Shaolin Soccer in America. And you sure Hero didn’t play there?

  19. Julie says:

I love the armour of god and just can’t wait to see cz12. A real Chinese action movie!

  20. Brmanuk says:

The film looks good, but I find it irritating that Jackie has decided to speak Mandarin in the film. Getting a bit tired of him pandering to the Mainland.

  21. Andrew Dasz says:

Is a pleasure participate in a JC Film…
JC prepare new stuff like Police Story 5 🙂

  22. Mark Lee says:

Hi just want to share a little bit of an advise,
Co actor- (Yao Xintong-coco) she is very noisy in this movie and act as though she was being rape. Talk all in Mandarin not like the old ones which is in Cantonese. Better introduced this Yao Xintong to Wong Jing so maybe she can produce porn instead.
Before that please make sure that she undergo breast transplant, very flat. I am sad for her ;(

  24. Tien Kwon says:

I saw the film already, but I still wanna see the US version. Can I spoil the movie? LOL Bad idea. Umm… all I got to say is… Jackie delivers again. CZ12 pwns, and it’s a hell of a lot better than Gorgeous, and The Medallion. The film is fun, easy to follow, and always… the action, stunts, martial arts, little gestures and movements keeps you glued to the screen. More innovative than Chan’s last movie. I just have a little problem with Jackie’s appearance in the movie, which is the only flaw for me. I really like the idea of 12 bronze animal heads being stolen and everything. It looks visually cool.

Some of the reviews has been negative. I don’t know why people are hating. I’ve been seeing: 2 out of 5 stars, a pedestrian film, CZ12 lumbers like a cheap DVD knock-off of one of Chan’s old classics, CZ12 is like watching a former star athlete struggle in a meaningless game.

Cheap knock-off? Umm when I saw it, the film didn’t seem cheap in any way. Jackie brought new ideas to the table. Those new ideas are new and refreshing. Jackie wrote the script to CZ12, if you don’t like that, then maybe he shouldn’t anymore lol. When I think of a cheap knock-off, I think of Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle. Almost everything that Chow puts in the movie is from one of his older films. Talk about re-using old ideas.

The former athlete comment is a little harsh… but I somewhat agree. Seems like the negative reviews are attacking Jackie. Maybe he should have waited a while before releasing CZ12, but age is catching up to him. In Expendables 2, the guys all look like former athletes. Jackie look no different, but from experience he added something new to CZ12 in my opinion. When the film was about to get bored, they cut away and keep the momentum going. I feel that works for not wasting our time watching it and for keeping us interested. Quick editing and so on, PLUS! Jackie let the extras and the other characters do more, and I really appreciate that.

Kwon Sang Woo got to do a lot and I’m so glad because if you’re into Korean movies and dramas like me, you would know that Kwon is a big star in South Korea, and he did a movie long time ago playing a Jackie Chan fan. So for me to see him in this movie with Jackie was awesome. Kwon got to do a few buddy to buddy scenes with Jackie much like with Tucker and Wilson, which is cool but we’ve seen it before. A bromance type of thing haha! Maybe the audience is getting tired of seeing that? lol.

For action sequences, the only kind of dull one is the dog chase. As for the martial art scenes, the girl fight was probably the worse. I think what’s going to surprise you all is that when Jackie fights, he speeds it up a bit… out of frustration maybe? It looks like he’s not speeding with the camera, but with his own ability. If Jackie is that fast, why did he slow it down for quite of few of his past films? Anyway, the speed and power of Chan makes up for his awkward appearance in the first half of the film. At the end, you know what you’re going to see… the typical stuff… Maybe critics are tired of big stunts and happy endings. Overall, the movie gets a thumbs up from me.
