Lau Siu Ming, the legendary Hong Kong actor, dancer and pioneer of the Hong Kong performing arts scene, has passed away at the age of 94. Details regarding his cause of death have not been publicly disclosed at this time.
Known affectionately to fans and colleagues as “Ming Sir,” Lau leaves behind an extraordinary career spanning decades, both on screen and on the stage. Before becoming one of Hong Kong cinema and television’s most recognizable character actors, Lau was an accomplished dancer who studied classical ballet in France and became one of the pioneers of Hong Kong’s modern dance movement.
Lau entered the film industry in 1979 when director Tsui Hark cast him in The Butterfly Murders. He would go on to establish himself as a familiar face in Hong Kong cinema, appearing in countless films and television productions throughout the following decades.
International audiences may best remember Lau for his unforgettable performances in Tsui Hark’s A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy, in which he played the sinister Tree Demon in the first and third films. His extensive filmography also includes Swordsman, The Butterfly Murders, Project A Part II, Police Story 2, Royal Warriors, Miracles, The Untold Story, Re-Cycle, and China Strike Force, while his television work made him a familiar presence to generations of Hong Kong audiences.
