This is really shitty news. Most of the time, when he was in a good movie, you could see his enthusiasm that he brought to the production. In later years when he was forced to do shitty direct to video movies, he would alternate between looking miserable and drunk. (Who could blame him for drinking to get though those films)
Robert Rodriguez posted a tribute to him and how great he was in Sin City. That was unexpected since Madsen spent all his screen time in that film looking like he didn’t want to be there and reciting his lines with zero energy. I figured that’s why he was recast in the sequel.
In the short film, Batman: Dying is Easy, he was cast as Harvey Bullock which should have been great, but he gave the same unenthusiastic performance there too. I remember when my friends and I talked about how he could have been Batman years ago.
After his personal tragedies, it was obvious that he wasn’t OK, and I hoped he would find that spark again.
