Danny Chan returns as ‘Bruce’ for ‘The Winds of Jingwu’

The fictional character of Chen Zhen – previously made famous by Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury (1972), Jet Li in Fist of Legend (1994) and Donnie Yen in both a 90’s Hong Kong TV show and in Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen (2010), and recently by Li Hao in Chen Zhen Legend (2020) – is once again proving that Chinese are not “the sick men of Asia” in The Winds of Jingwu (aka Chen Zhen), an upcoming film from director Zhu Xian.

Back in the heels in the character of Chen Zhen (at this point we’re making it official: the character’s name is a synonym for “Bruce Lee”) is Danny Chan Kwok-kwan, who stars alongside cult kung fu icon Bruce Leung Siu Lung (Bruce and Iron Finger, Kung Fu Hustle).

Of course, this far from the first time Danny is playing “Bruce”. His breakout performance in Stephen Chow’s 2001 Blockbuster hit Shaolin Soccer earned him steady work in a number of movies playing “Bruce”, but his first real portrayal as Bruce Lee came in the form of The Legend of Bruce Lee (2008), a 50-episode series that centered on Bruce’s life starting from his early Hong Kong years to his untimely death.

In 2015 and 2019, Danny co-starred as “Bruce” opposite Donnie Yen in Ip Man 3 and Ip Man 4, respectively. In between these two projects, Danny starred as “Chen Zhen/Bruce” in Kung Fu Big League (2018), where he appeared alongside Vincent Zhao (as Wong Fei Hung), Dennis To (as Ip Man) and Andy On (as Huo Yuan Jia).

It should also be worth mentioning that Danny also played “Bruce” in the form of a 90-second television commercial for Johnnie Walker Blue Label whiskey.
