Interesting that the coverart suggests that Peace Hotel is the most important movie in the boxset when that honor belongs to All About Ah Long.
Spoiler Alert
Chow did the motorcylce protaganist gets killed at end of the movie 2 years before Andy Lau’s even more iconic A Moment of Romance.
Second favourite of the boxset would be Treasure Hunt. Mark Gor meets San Te, equal parts wacky/melodramatic, equal parts sincere/parody Jeffrey Lau style
TREASURE HUNT is a ‘kitchen sink’ mess that only HK in the 90s could produce. But it has charm by the bucketload, and a luminous Wu Chien Lien.
Not to mention a perfect use of Yanni’s magnificent ‘Reflections of Passion’.
Oh yes. I needed that part in the movie to remind me of when Beavis and Butt-Head critiqued the music video of that piece.
It’s cool to see a volume 2. Unfortunately, Peace Hotel is not one of my favorites. I went into it thinking it would be the Asian equivalent to a Sergio Leone film, but found it very slow and un-compelling save for the Django inspired machine gun scene.
I was hoping they’d include Goodbye My Friend since it’s one of the few non-Woo heroic bloodshed films Chow has done. I know it got a video release in the US as Shanghai Killer.
Peace Hotel is more famous for being the last Golden Princess movie ever. And its also functions as a handing over from the old guard to the new as after this movie Chow flies off to Hollywood while Wai Ka Fai teams up with Johnnie To and knocks out one classic romcom and crime thriller after another.
The actual movie though is very meh. Chow and Cecila Yip don’t repeat the magic from Hiong Kong 1941.
