As much as we’d love for this to be a live action adaptation of Jordan Mechner’s classic 1984 video game of the same name, it isn’t. Even better, this Karateka is based on the inspiring true story of Sandra Sánchez.
Karateka follows Sandra Sánchez (Andrea Ros), who chased her Olympic dream at 39, an age when most athletes have already stepped away from competition. Supported by her coach (Patrick Criado) and life partner, she set out to challenge Japan’s long-standing dominance and carve her name into karate history.
Directed by Aritz Moreno (Advantages of Travelling by Train), Karateka features an international supporting cast that includes Ernesto Alterio (The Other Side of the Bed), Antonio Durán “Morris” (Cell 211), Pablo Álvarez (Zeta), Pilar Castro (Rage), Vicente Vergara (Kepler 6B), Mizuki Yoshida (Mayhem Girls), Denden (Cold Fish), Ayako Fujitani (Man from Reno), Katsuki Suzuki (Radiation House) and Hoshimi Asai (Versus).
🔥 Footnote: The real Sandra Sánchez is widely regarded by the World Karate Federation as the greatest female kata athlete of all time. *Spoiler alert* After overcoming setbacks late in her career, she went on to make history at the 2020 Tokyo Games, winning karate’s first-ever Olympic gold medal.
Sony is releasing Karateka domestically on October 30, 2026. A U.S. release date has yet to be announced. Until then, don’t miss the Trailer:
