Brave Citizen (2023) Review

ā€œBrave Citizenā€ Theatrical Poster

Director: Park Jin-pyo
Cast: Shin Hae-Sun, Lee Jun-Young, Park Jung-Woo, Park Hyuk-Kwon, Cha Chung-Hwa, Lee Chan-Hyeong, Bae Hyeon-Jun, Cha Woo-Min, Lee Joong-Ok
Running Time: 113 min.

By Paul Bramhall

High school power struggles have always been present in cinema, and they usually take the form of an underdog going up against one or more characters who are best described as bullies, worst as violent psychopaths. Korean cinema is no different. Whether it be Kwon Sang-woo taking on a gang of classroom thugs in Once Upon a Time in Highschool, or Jang Hyuk going up against the villainous vice principal in Volcano High, there’s something cathartic about seeing those that take advantage of their status or strength get their just desserts. Those productions fit the classic archetype of the genre, but its 2023’s Brave Citizen that may be the first to frame the story from the perspective of a teacher going head-to-head with the resident school bully. A stand-in teacher at that!

Sure there’s been stories that go for the ā€˜teacher pushed over the edge’ angle, Miike Takashi’s Lesson of the Evil being a classic example, however for his latest outing director Park Jin-pyo has different ideas. A director that falls into that distinctly Korean category of disappearing for years at a time, Jin-pyo looked to be a regular fixture in Korean cinema during the 2000’s, debuting in 2002 with the controversial Too Young to Die (controversial only because of its portrayal of sex between a 70+ years old couple!). During the rest of the decade he’d helm weighty dramatic Continue reading

At the height of summer, teacher Mr Cheung (John Sham) takes a small group of his students on an excursion to explore a rural island that he assumes is uninhabited. But upon arrival, Cheung and his class discover that they are not alone – the island is, in fact, home Continue reading

Why Netflix is one of the best streaming platforms?

"Extraction" Theatrical Poster

“Extraction” Theatrical Poster

Why is it the best? It’s simple: Netflix has a huge catalogue that mixes high-quality originals and big, popular movies. Extraction is a good example: it became one of Netflix’s most-watched original films ever, and its sequel also climbed high in the charts.

Before you read on, be sure to check out Netflix Coupon Codes, Promo Codes & Discounts – that is, if you’re not already a member.

Netflix produces both its own content and licenses titles from many parts of the world, there’s always something new to find whether you like action, drama, comedy, or foreign language films. This variety means more chances of stumbling on something that truly grabs you.

Netflix is constantly improving the user experience. Features like offline downloads, multiple language subtitles and audio tracks, personalized recommendations based on what you’ve watched before – all make it easier to find and enjoy what you like without jumping through hoops.

Also, Netflix tends to invest in big scale production values (e.g. action set pieces, impressive visuals, star casts), as with Extraction where things like fight choreography, cinematography and pacing feel on par with big cinema-action films.

Lastly, Netflix often leads in popularity and trendsetting. A lot of people watch Netflix not just because they know what’s there, but because they want to be part of conversations around its biggest hits and new releases. Extraction 2 for example, became one of Netflix’s biggest movies, helping cement that franchise’s place in its most-watched list.

Because Netflix releases content globally, many of its big originals attract huge audiences across different countries. This makes Netflix a place where you can discover both mainstream hits and niche content, keeping things fresh.

Paradise Z | aka Dead Earth (2020) Review

"Paradise Z" Theatrical Poster

“Paradise Z” Theatrical Poster

AKA: Two of Us
Director: Wych Kaosayananda
Cast: Milena Gorum, Alice Tantayanon, Michael S. New, Brian Migliore, Lee Mason
Running Time: 90 min.Ā

By Paul BramhallĀ

In the closing scenes of 2019’s The Driver, the final entry (and first to be released – best not to ask) in director Wych Kaosayananda’s post-apocalyptic zombie trilogy, we’re introduced to a pair of zombie hunting femme fatales in the form of Milena Gorum and Alice Tantayanon. The pair play the leads in the first entry, titled Two of Us, which at the time of The Drivers’s release was still in post-production (the likely reason being that the latter’s star, Mark Dacascos, had just appeared on the big screen as the main villain in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which saw it fast tracked so as to strike while the iron’s hot). Not that I went looking all that hard, but I figured Two of Us must have ended up shelved, as it seemed to never see the light of day, and it was only recently I found out why – since 2019 it’s gone through a couple of re-titles, first as Dead Earth, before eventually getting released in most territories as Paradise Z.

Naturally, curiosity led me to check it out. To say Paradise Z has a minimal cast would be the understatement of the year, with the closing credits listing only 3 cast members, despite at least a handful more roles showing up on screen (although admittedly, all of them amount to only seconds of screentime). Gorum and Tantayanon play a pair of apocalypse survivors who, after losing their husbands to a zombie attack at the same time, come to realise Continue reading

ARMAGEDDON IS NEAR! New ‘Kickboxer’ film shoots this month with Alain Moussi and Mark Dacascos

"Kickboxer: Armageddon" Theatrical Poster

“Kickboxer: Armageddon” Theatrical Poster

Dimitri Logothetis, director of 2018’s Kickboxer: Retaliation, as well as co-director for 2016’sĀ Kickboxer: Vengeance, will soon begin Kickboxer: Armageddon, the upcoming third entry of the rebooted Kickboxer franchise.

Martial arts star Alain Moussi (Kill Order, Jiu Jitsu) will reprise his role as Kurt Sloane from Kickboxer: Vengeance and Kickboxer: Retaliation.

This time around, Moussi is being joined Mark Dacascos (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, One Night in Bangkok), who returns to the franchise for the first time since 1995’s Redemption: Kickboxer 5 (which was technically a standalone film, since it doesn’t revolve around the “Sloan” name… think of it as the Halloween 3 of the Kickboxer franchise).

Contrary to previous Continue reading

Bang (2025) Review

"Bang" Theatrical Poster

“Bang” Theatrical Poster

Director: Wych Kaosayananda
Cast: Jack Kesy, Peter Weller, Tristin Mays, Kane Kosugi, Elliot Allison, Paul Mann, Steve Bastoni
Running Time: 88 min.

By Paul Bramhall

Being a fan of director Wych Kaosayananda can be a tough gig, or at least, that’s what I assume. Since returning in 2012 after a 10-year hiatus following 2002’s Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, if there’s one thing that’s become apparent, it’s that getting a production in the can is far from an easy task. Most of the mid to late 2010’s were spent waiting for the action flick Maxx, set to star Jason Patric and Kane Kosugi, and while it’s generally believed to have started filming, the final product has remained elusive. Then there’s The Rider, also set to star Kane Kosugi and the middle entry in Kaosayananda’s zombie trilogy (sandwiched by Paradise Z and The Driver), which seemingly never made it past pre-production. The last time Kaosayananda helmed a movie to completion was 2020’s One Night in Bangkok, and following another (much shorter this time) 5-year hiatus, in 2025 he’s back with the actioner Bang.

In the tradition of Shatter, Carter, and – yes let’s go there – Bean, the title takes its name from the surname of its main character, William Bang (and no, not once is he referred to as Bill Bang, which seems like a missed opportunity). A hitman for hire played by Jack Kesy (Hellboy: The Crooked Man), upon getting out of prison he’s soon back in the fold of the Italian mafia family he worked for previously, overseen by a scenery chewing Peter Weller (Robocop). Despite Continue reading
