THE MOVIE: The Expendables 2 earned slightly more money than its predecessor at the global box office, even if it wasn’t as successful in America. Sylvester Stallone is currently prepping the third installment of the action-adventure franchise that follows the exploits of Barney Ross, Lee Christmas, and their associates. The Expendables 3 is being directed by Patrick Hughes (Red Hill). The film is due for release on August 15th 2014.

Updates: Stallone has dropped a bombshell via Twitter – Bruce Willis is out of the cast, possibly due to “laziness” and “greed” (as Stallone hinted on Twitter).

After months of rumors, the official (or is it?) cast has finally been announced on this day (August 19th) of the film’s first production shoot in Bulgaria: The returning stars are Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Arnold Schwarzenegger. New members are Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, MMA’s Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell and boxing champion Victor Ortiz. 1. Ningen says:

So they’re finally working together? That’d be cool. Jackie allegedly didn’t like a prior non-Expendables offer from Sly which would’ve cast him as a druglord.

  2. Sam says:

This is awesome! I just saw the Expendables 2 on Friday night. I ordered it through DISHOnline.com right before leaving my office at DISH. It was downloaded to my Hopper DVR before I even got home, and I was able to watch it right away. It was a great movie, but at one point I literally thought “this movie would be so much better with Jackie Chan in it.” It looks like that’s going to happen; with Chan involved I can’t think of any action stars that haven’t been included in the series.

  3. Ningen says:

You might wanna mention that, if it happens, it will be Woo and Chan’s first reunion since Hand of Death.

  4. American Ninja Man says:

Honestly this is a great idea. Indeed Woo would be working with many actors he had worked with before (Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, Van Damme and Dolph) and I think such would be a dream come true, let’s hope this shit works out because Woo could make this into a fucking classic. I loved Expendables 2.

As for Van Damme, bring him back as a twin.

    • Ningen says:

Woo should just do an official Hard Boiled sequel already so we no longer have to be confused with that thing from Wong Jing. Video games do not count.

    • Tien Kwon says:

I have Expendables 1 and 2 on Blu-ray and I don’t love it. The first one is better, even though they stereotype Asians using Jet. Simon’s vision is boring for part 2. Too many wide shots. The 1st one, when the action comes, it’s in your face. I like Stallone’s approach because it’s not a DRAMA, it’s ACTION. His direction gets your adrenaline pumping. Simon West’s direction don’t get you excited. I like the wide shots, but why am I so bored? We all know he was trying to bring back like the 80s type of action in American cinema, and not HK cinema. He just failed at making it interesting. If he got some viewers to enjoy the movie then that’s the point, but it’s safe to say that the movie is just so-so, average, not all that great. A lot of people did NOT like it, and I’m with them. Everytime I think of the film, I picture the guys just standing around like old men. I think of that one scene where they were having breakfast. Plain and boring. No wonder Donnie Yen turned it down. No wonder Jet Li left early on in the film. Rumors were flying around that Jet didn’t want to do the sequel, then it was said he didn’t want to do it because of the project with Tsui Hark. I’M SO HAPPY DONNIE TURNED IT DOWN. Stallone’s idea of mercenaries ripping on each other is stupid. Look at the first Expendables with Jet’s character. I don’t know why Jet didn’t read the script because they have the guys kind of making fun of Yin Yang and stereotyping Asians. Donnie probably noticed this because he understands English and American bull crap better. I feel bad for Jet doing the first one. We see him in the beginning of the 2nd one, but it’s like a special guest appearance type of thing because his screen time was just a few minutes. After Jet leaves, it feels like part of the Expendables team is missing, and that’s not good because he was in part 1 so we know how those guys were together. Their idea of throwing in an Asian woman for replacing Jet was dumb too. She won’t be a memory. Here is what I really hate… Dolph’s character is always picking on Jet, but when Jet is gone, he’s hitting on the Asian lady who looks like Jet. It’s so gay. Stallone probably wanted someone to direct part 2 who has not seen the 1st one, and it’s quite obvious because if you watch West’s commentary, he don’t mention seeing the first one. I like the idea of Woo to direct part 3, which should be the final Expendables. They’re getting way too old, especially Stallone. Most of those guys still got some fight left, but Sly and Arnold are about to expire. Now having Jackie in the picture isn’t good. They’re gonna turn part 3 into a buddy picture and that’s messed up, but if we look, part 1 and 2 played out so differently, so I guess it shouldn’t be a big deal to have part 3 in a different pace. I just hope they don’t insult Asians again. I heard Jackie talk, and it’s obvious that he didn’t see both of the Expendables films, and what’s really annoying is that he announced he would retire from action films. Jackie isn’t using his head anymore I swear. He is completely blinded right now. I know he admires Stallone, but watch those Expendables movies first before deciding to do the picture. Someone like Bruce Lee would never do a movie with a bunch of hollywood celebrities if they’re insulting Asians. Bruce is a man of honor and he’s someone who is actually educated, so I bet you if he was still alive and Stallone offered him the role of Yin Yang, he would turn it down. Bruce Lee is not a dumb ass like Jackie. No offense to Jackie.

      • HKFanatic says:

Have to admit I agree with a lot of what you said. Simon West basically killed Expendables 2.

The first movie wasn’t exactly a masterpiece but Stallone gave the film some semblance of a story-arc and meaning, and he definitely knows how to capture action/violence (especially with the re-edited Director’s Cut). The original at least had solid production values and felt designed for the big screen.

Jump to Expendables 2. Simon West failed to bring any of the style or flair of Con Air to this picture. Simply put, it’s a very ugly and murky looking movie. Bland locations like empty fields and empty airports, obscured with a lot of smoke and fog to hide the fact that there’s not much to look at. Unbearable dialogue with humor that fell flat. The final fight scene between Stallone and Van Damme was good but lasted, what, all of a minute and a half. After a pretty fun opening scene, the movie just fizzled out. Simon West didn’t have a vision for the film and it ended up being one of the worst shot movies of 2012.

        • I don’t want to see another Expendables movie unless it’s done right. Period. I think Sly should direct and craft it the same way he did his last Rambo flick. Simon West should only do direct to video films. That’s what he’s good at.

  5. American Ninja Man says:

I liked both movies and I honestly don’t think you’re gonna get much better than what you got. Part of it is the fact that these guys are old. Also I liked the second one better, the joke angle was sometimes too ridiculous but Van Damme was a good villain, the fights were good and the biggest issue for me is that the movies are what you expect vs what they could be.

Getting John Woo would be a huge big step. I think West brought a Con-Air of jokey tone and I think most directors approach 80s action in the same way. Still, if we’re on the subject of Jet Li, these movies are easily in the top percentile for Li’s American movies. The real truth is, we grew up with these guys, loved their movies and the problem is, you really just can’t go home anymore. I mean these movies are really the last things before these guy go into obscurity.

It’s not 1995 anymore. Sad but true.

Actually some of the best work these guys did were the obscure movies. I mean Bridge Of Dragons with Dolph has some great action sequences, I saw this recently on TV and it’s fantastic, Undisputed 2 and 3, Universal Soldier Regeneration, Knock Off (I’ve finally come around on it MPM) and to a certain point the new Uni Sol Day Of Reckoning flick. I mean i’m going to be bold here and say you can take Undisputed 2-3, Bridge Of Dragons, Knock Off and Universal Soldier 3-4 and they hold their own with HK martial arts in terms of choreography. The only other ones I would make this claim about is King Of The Kickboxers, Bloodsport and No Retreat No Surrender 2-3. Isaac Florentine and John Hyams are action geniuses and like the talent of Lucas Lo before him, basically will go unrecognized until a few years down the road.

    • HKFanatic says:

You mention a lot of good movies. Isaac Florentine is indeed underrated. Along those lines, his movie U.S. Seals 2 is little seen but serves as a very campy, very fun action movie full of martial arts and crazy violence. His 2003 semi-sequel Special Forces isn’t as remarkable but it does have one of Scott Adkins’ best fight scenes…the ending battle between Adkins and (I believe) stunt coordinator Vladislavas Jacukevicius is heavily indebted to Hong Kong choreography and almost as good.

Another great guy was Tony Leung Siu-hung. He’s back in Hong Kong now doing fight choreography, but he directed some decent English-language stuff in the 90’s. Superfights and Bloodmoon, while not necessarily masterpieces, were a genuine attempt to bring HK-style action to Western shores.

Of course, Steve Wang’s ‘Drive’ with Mark Dacascos is still one of the best as well.

More recently, Michael Jai White’s movie “Blood ‘n Bone” had one of the best ending fight scenes of all time between White and Matt Mullins. Larnell Stovall helped do stuntwork on that film – almost anything he choreographs or coordinates these days turns out great.

  6. American Ninja Man says:

You’re right. Drive and Blood and Bone were indeed up there with the titles I mentioned. Special Forces and Cold Harvest were also pretty good. Shepherd Border Patrol was pretty good too.

I know who you’re talking about as well with the Bloodmoon guy, I liked that too but I don’t remember if the fights were on that HK standard. I’ve never seen Superfights but I will seek it out. Hopefully it’s on DVD.

  7. wildcard bittches says:

is sly on drugs? young blood? tech wizards??? a wise-cracking female???? WTF!
this sounds like a cw tv show and not another expendable movie.

  8. Tien Kwon says:

I say YES to Wesley Snipes and NO to Mil Gibson. Bad taste Stallone! Bad! John Woo to direct is a better idea. He knows ACTION more than you Balboa!!! LOL. Snipes kicked yo ass in Demolition Man and he’ll kick yo ass again in the final Expendables. xD

Since when Nicolas Cage was an action star?

  9. Maybe the new director is Keanu Reeves! lol

  10. kuff says:

    Amtal NOOOOO pleeeasee

  11. STDZ says:

So basically this guy Sly hired is just going to be Sly’s puppet, the guy that does what is told while Sly kicks and punches. That is the only way he will top his last action hit Rambo 4 film. I guess there has got to be a point where they start bringing in the new blood of actors and directors. I think there is some other directors out there that deserve it more so this guy got really fucking lucky.

  12. Tien Kwon says:

why does he want to top the raid? iko uwais is still a newbie.

stallone, you’re a old man now, you should be worried about pulling an muscle. xD

gods of war my @ss! more like old men of war lol.

    • HKFanatic says:

If Stallone wants to top The Raid or even just his last Rambo movie, he’s going to have to up his game with lengthy fight sequences and topnotch choreography. No more shakycam stuff or 60-second fight scenes.

      • If he wants to top THE RAID, he’s going to have to make a movie that’s NOT an Expendables movie. lol But I agree, he needs to get back on whatever he did with that last Rambo movie. Come to think of it, why doesn’t he just try to tag Gareth Evans to direct the next Expendables flick? He’d be perfect.

  13. American Ninja Man says:

I liked both Expendables movies but that’s a tall order.

  14. STDZ says:

I liked Rambo 4 more than the Raid so I know Sly can do it, the question is will they?

  15. Ningen says:

Milla’s goofy as hell. Sly could do better.

  16. Ningen says:

The only way a part 3 can work is if they jettison some of the cast members from the last two films. They add too many new actors to the current roster, and it’ll be a mess fitting them all in.

  17. STDZ says:

No to Cage and Milla. Yes to Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Snipes, Chan, Rourke and all the other regular guys.

  18. Tien Kwon says:

milla jovovich? the resident evil chick? i don’t really consider her an action star. when i think of a female actioner, she’s not the first one to pop up in my head. milla is your typical hollywood actress, who uses stunt doubles and wire work. if they need a tough chick, hire that pro-wrestler victoria lol. i mean, come on, stallone used stone cold steve austin in the first one.

  19. Nick says:

I guess she’ll bring in some money. There honestly aren’t a lot of female action stars. Mila and Kate Beckinsale (of Underworld fame) aren’t real “action” stars, they just have one film series where they use doubles and wire work a lot. Someone like Michelle Rodriguez or Zoe Saldana, who have repeatedly done action roles in different films, should be considered.

  20. STDZ says:

I knew Jackie would be a chump and back out of this. Not for one second did I believe his lying mouth about being in EX3. Too me, Chan is over and done with. He knew it was an ensemble film, why did he even say he wants to be in it regardless of it being good or not? Jackie is full of shit.

  21. Tien Kwon says:

i agree with STDZ…. but um he has always been that way. he was probably star strucked lol. the real problem now is… without jackie, the excitement of EXP3 will go down hill. jackie is a big name in the action biz…. fans go beg him to do the movie lol. chan needs to realize that he did a small role with stallone in this one flick call An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn, and that film sucked ass. if he didn’t mind doing that film back in 97, just a 10 second appearance in EXP3 wouldn’t hurt. the moment i heard jackie say “i don’t care about the story.” it’s so obvious that he didn’t even see EXP 1 & 2. i didn’t like what they did with jet li in the first one, and the 2nd one is boring as fk! scott adkins was underused too. then again, scott isn’t that big of a star. this is about jackie chan lol. jackie do the movie! omg everyone is gonna flame this so badly.

    • HKFanatic says:

I tend to agree with you, Tien. I really wouldn’t mind if The Expendables 3 cut down on the cast a little bit, because with so many actors/characters it’s hard for anyone to shine in the spotlight. If they stripped the team down to Sly, Jackie, Dolph, Jason Statham, and Terry Crews, it would make for a tighter movie, I think.

Either way I would love to see Sly and Jackie in “The Expendables 3” directed by John Woo or Mel Gibson. Sadly it looks like that won’t happen anymore.

  22. STDZ says:

I watched the videos and I don’t see Jackie saying any of that crap. Where do you guys get this info from?

    • Will says:

      STDZ,

What’s up. I was at this event, I submitted the news. Keep in mind the videos posted by the Academy are highlights of the event, not the full Q&A. The videos run a total of about 20 minutes, and Jackie talked straight for about an hour. Trust me, he talked extensively about Stallone and “Expendables 3.”

I’ve been to a lot of events like this at various venues – JJ Abrams, Jon Favreau, Ang Lee, Keira Knightley, Danny Boyle, Mark Boal, etc – and the venues always edit discussion of potential future projects out of audio and video of the event.

  23. STDZ says:

Oh ok thanks for the tip Will. Hope Jackie loosens up and join the movie to try and make it better than the last one.

  24. Tien Kwon says:

stallone should really like make a deal with jackie. do EXP3, and he’ll do the buddy cop flick. man, what is up with jackie and buddy cop movies? i think the rush hours and police stories are enough. he doesn’t need to do the cops and robbers scenario all the time just to get some good stunts and action out of it.

  25. STDZ says:

Looks like we are getting another Rocky movie too.

  26. Ningen says:

Look, I still like Harrison Ford, in spite of Indy 4. But he literally looks like a grandpa, now. There is no way I can buy him pulling a Charles Bronson, when it’s tough enough for him to deliver his lines.

    • Tien Kwon says:

Charles Bronson? HAHA! Ningen, dude! Look at Sly, Arnold, and Van Damme. They look like grandfathers too. xD So I guess adding Ford to the cast is fine. He’s done his share of action movies. Old Han Solo FTW lol.

It will be interesting to see Seagal.

There is no need for Willis and Van Damme to return. I heard that they were going to make Vilain have like a twin brother so Van Damme can come back. Sometimes less is more, so seeing Norris and Van Damme once is good enough. They just need to put their mark in the film to kind of say thank you to all the fans for supporting them through out their action movie career. That’s about it. The movie is for us, the fans.

  27. STDZ says:

Ford will be good in this, I’m looking forward to it! Hopefully he is not in it for 3 minutes like Chuck Norris was in the last one. Bruce did his share of work on the last 2, don’t really need him in this one anyway.

  28. STDZ says:

I don’t care what the news article says, I have a good feeling that Chan will be in the movie.

  29. STDZ says:

That was a quickie, and I don’t give a crap what Jackie Chan does anymore.

  30. Tien Kwon says:

Cool, officially new posters… lol. They don’t have Jackie, but it still exciting. Man, it looks like they shot those in a quickie. Seem like they’re not even in character. They’re just being themselves. This would be round 2 for Stallone and Snipe hehe.

  31. Cliff says:

Now that’s a lot of airbrushing going on!

  32. Ningen says:

I know it’s fucking impossible, but part of me is hoping this is the highest grossing film of the year.

  33. Ningen says:

The rating downgrade blows, but I hope the action scenes will still deliver as well as in the first two films.

  34. Tomas says:

Back this up for a minute………….This will be rated PG-13?!?!?!?!?!?!

  35. Tory says:

“I think we owe it to the next generation”

Mon-ay! So much for competing with The Raid, indeed. I’m normally not one to complain about ratings, but if you wanna top Evans, you’re gonna have to go “R”. Unless he’s got some bloodless, but really, really elaborate stuff planned, that is.

  36. STDZ says:

I have never heard a load of bigger bullshit from Sly’s mouth. The Expendables movies were not up to par, and they were disappointing lacking any John Woo like action. They pulled this same publicity stunt with EX2, and now they are completely catering to the children this time around once more. Will this lead to another change in the rating? Does it matter? The Expendables already seemed like PG13 movies even though they slapped an R rating on it for some shit looking CGI blood.

  37. STDZ says:

There may be an R rated cut for the blu ray release.

  38. Pingon305 says:

I saw the leaked version and let me tell you.sly digged his own grave.it never even compared to the raid.this movie is rococop 3,universal soldier the return, terminator 3,alien vs predator 1&2 bad.
    Read my review
Say goodbye ex. Franchise this is the worst watered down movie since terminator salvation.sly is a sellout and screws his fans over for that the movie will bomb and the ex. Are no more

Fights are the most edited chopped up no blood pg13 soulless scenes.especially the last fight between Gibson and Stallone.makes the van damme fight look like the Bruce lee/chuck Norris battle.banderas has the best performance and he’s not even an action star,Gibson is a great acting villain with very little dialogue and is cursed from machete kills.in fact this movie ties with machete kills.
