Director Albert Hughes, one half of the Hughes Brothers (Menace II Society, Book of Eli), is teaming up with martial arts star Iko Uwais (Wings of Dread, The Raid, The Raid 2) for Jakarta.
The upcoming series revolves around a generational family set in Indonesia’s bustling capital, where rapid globalization reshapes the city’s criminal underworld.
Jakarta is spearheaded by Kirk Ward and Joshua W. Wagner, who preivously worked on John Wick spin-off The Continental. In addition to starring, Uwais is serving as executive producer through his Uwais Pictures banner alongside Ryan Santoso (Mile 22). Alcon Entertainment (Blade Runner 2049) is producing (via Variety).
🔥 Footnote: Albert Hughes, a longtime fan of Asian action cinema, was once attached to direct an English language remake of Kim Jee-woon’s acclaimed 2005 Korean thriller A Bittersweet Life. Hopefully Jakarta remains in his hands, because he’s exactly the kind of filmmaker this project deserves.
