Painted Faces | Blu-ray (88 Films)

On June 15, 2026, 88 Films will be releasing a Blu-ray (Region B) for Painted Faces, a 1988 Hong Kong classic from director Alex Law Kai-Yui (Now You See Love… Now You Don’t).

Painted Faces tells the story about the Peking Opera School that Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao attended as young men. Specifically, their relationship to their teacher, Master Yu Jim-Yuen (the real-life Yu Jim-Yuen would later star in 1979’s The Old Master).

The kung fu legend takes a rare dramatic role as the tough-but-fair master Yu (Hung), a teacher training young kids for a life on the stage. But times are changing; the theatres are closing and Yu must find new opportunities for his charges, even if it means letting them work in movies…

Based on the real-life childhoods of Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao and, yes, Sammo himself (he’s playing his own, real-life master), Painted Faces is a nostalgic tribute to a man who turned children into superstars.

The film also stars Cheng Pei-Pei (Golden Swallow), Lam Ching-Ying (When Taekwondo Strikes), John Shum (Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars) and Wu Ma (Circus Kids).

  1. Typo says:

    Who did that ugly cover?

He should be shot on sight.

I’m kidding, but watch out, dude.

  2. Ska Martes says:

Sammo looks like he need to take a dump but forgot the toilet paper. Either that or he’s constipated and looking confused at the pharmacist. Not a great coverart but not as bad Jackie chans heartstroke face for Island on Fire. came across that the other day and that is an all time stinker
