Now shipping from Goodie Emporium is the Blu-ray (Region A/B) for The Postman Strikes Back, a 1982 Hong Kong film directed by Ronny Yu (The Occupant).
The film stars Leung Kar Yan (Exciting Dragon), Chow Yun Fat (The Head Hunter), Fan Mei Sheng (12 Gold Medallions), Cherie Chung (Walk on Fire), Eddie Ko (Warriors of Future) and Brandy Yuen (Dreadnaught).
The Postman Strikes Back is a unique entry in the Hong Kong action genre for a number of reasons. Set in 1913, it’s a movie which brings together elements of the old-school and the new-wave which can only be appreciated in retrospect. An early directorial effort from Ronny Yu, with the exception of his 1986 production with Brandon Lee, Legacy of Rage, it wouldn’t be until over a decade later when he’d receive full recognition for his talents, when he helmed the iconic tale of doomed lovers in The Bride with White Hair.
In The Postman Strikes Back (read our review), tumultuous China is about to fall apart at the seams under the rule of egomaniacal warlords. Aspiring to proclaim himself emperor, President Yuan conspires with a horde of villainous bandits to weed out dissident warlords. Fu Jun (Chow Yun Fat) and three others are fooled to deliver the hidden treachery. Brutally ambushed time and again, the gang senses something foul and refuses to be part of the conspiracy. Their desperate attempts to procrastinate, however, all go in vain. They are left with no choice but to right their wrongs.

What a unique choice. I always felt that this movie was under appreciated since it wasn’t a regular story and had a different approach to action. Some people thought that Chow Yun-Fat using his scarf as a weapon was stupid, but I thought it worked, and the fight choreography was similar to what Shaw Brothers did before.
