“Gunpowder Milkshake” Theatrical Poster
Navot Papushado, who co-directed 2013’s Big Bad Wolves with Aharon Keshales, is back with a female-centric actioner titled Gunpowder Milkshake.
Written by Ehud Lavski (writer of the upcoming Once Upon a Time in Palestine, which reunites Papushado and Keshales as a directing team), Gunpowder Milkshake stars Karen Gillan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Lena Headey (Dredd), Angela Bassett (Black Panther), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Michelle Yeoh (Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy) and Carla Gugino (Spy Kids).
Sam (Gillan) was only 12 years old when her mother Scarlet (Headey), an elite assassin, was forced to abandon her. Sam was raised by The Firm, the ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for. Now, 15 years later, Sam has followed in her mother’s footsteps and grown into a fierce hit-woman. But when a high-risk job goes wrong, Sam must choose between serving The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent 8-year-old girl – Emily (Coleman). With a target on her back, Sam has only one chance to survive: Reunite with her mother and her lethal associates, The Librarians (played by Yeoh, Bassette and Gugino).

Between this, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s “Kate” and Maggie Q’s “The Protege”, it’s Girl Power Galore in the Big Budget Action Spectacle Arena over the next couple of months, with the Statham/Guy Ritchie “Wrath Of Man” being the sole heavy testosterone entry.
Not just the next couple months, but the next couple years. Black Widow, 355, the Furiosa movie, and lots more are on their way.
It’s all good, as long as they don’t suck. I’m enjoying the action girls with guns revival but there’s been more misses than hits. Outside of Atomic Blonde (which is still a mess outside action scenes), most of the others I’ve seen, like Peppermint, Proud Mary, Harley Quinn(obnoxious), Rhythm Section, Anna, Tomb Raider, Close and those awful Olga Kurylenko/ Ruby Rose vehicles have been mostly disappointments. Loved the Villainess but that’s Korean.
Let’s hope this upcoming slate is better.

I’ll pass. But don’t blink an eye, you’ll miss the only legitimate actress in this movie, Michelle Yeoh.
I’ve been digging most of Hollywood’s Girls with Guns marathon since 2010, and was hoping this one would live up to my liking. Sadly, it was just OK.
There’s a lot of good action highlights in the movie such as Michelle Yeoh using a chain as a weapon and having a brief John Woo moment, and Carla Gugino’s fight with a henchman, but there’s a lot of dumb stuff too. Karen Gillen gets some good action beats but there are too many moments where someone needs to save her ass like a damsel in distress which makes her come across as an ineffective action hero.
She doesn’t have to be untouchable, but it seems like if she didn’t have allies, she’d have died in the first act of the movie. The big set piece in the library didn’t have a good flow to it with the action often starting up and stopping suddenly, and didn’t feel like something directed by action movie experts.
I’m not happy with the sequel baiting, but here’s to hoping the film makers have something better in mind.
Watched this recently and didn’t like it either. Gillian is not a very convincing fighter when it’s not stunt doubles. Action scenes all sound good on paper but only the taped arms hospital thing delivers. The movie is more cool vibes than anything else. Wonder what Paul thinks.
