Drunken Master II | Blu-ray (Warner)

Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Warner Archive Collection’s Drunken Master II, which is presented for the first time from a 4K scan of Original Camera Negative.

Jackie Chan and Lau Kar Leung’s hit 1994 film Drunken Master II cemented Chan’s iconic status as an action hero unlike any other.

In turbulent China before World War I, the collapse of the Manchu Dynasty fuels violent uprisings and political chaos–the perfect setting for a grand-scale smuggling ring led by an unscrupulous British consul. When the ring plots to steal China’s crown jewels only one man, legendary “Drunken Fist” master Huang Fei-hung (Jackie Chan), possesses the courage and ferocity to stop the ruthless gang.

This edition contains three different audio tracks, the original Cantonese language track, Mandarin and English. *Note* This new high definition master taken from the original camera negative offers the option of the original English subtitles that appeared on theatrical prints in Hong Kong, as well as other venues, and contain the spelling and grammatical errors as seen at the time. All right. All of this is a bad April fool’s joke, or just the part about the English subtiles.

Let’s do this! It’s probably asking for too much to expect any extras, but I’ll take the movie in its original form. That’s good enough to warrant the purchase. Took ‘em long enough, though…

Have you checked out Hong Kong Rescue? I can enthusiastically recommend their version of Drunken Master 2, 2 disc blu ray special edition, fully loaded with special features, including a Bey Logan audio commentary track.

      • ToryK says:

I bought it, actually! I just can’t seem to find it. It’s a fantastic release, I just figure if I’m gonna buy it again, I’ll buy the official release and let them know we want more stuff like this. They just sat on Pedicab Driver for years. Thanks for looking out, though, man. 🍻

        Hey there,

Would you mind sharing your experience with HKR? I purchased 6 Blu-rays from him two months ago. I have not received any sort of communication whatsoever – receipt of my money, order etc… My attempts to contact him have been completely ignored. I really hope I didn’t just throw away $162 Cdn. Plus I really, really want those discs.

        • Bruce says:

I can relate. Much as I was happy with the finished product when I finally received them, it took roughly forever to get to that point, their customer service, in my experience, pretty much sucked. I waited about 6 months, made repeated efforts to contact them regarding the status of my order, only got anywhere when I complained through Paypal.
All that being said, when I did eventually receive my blu-rays (Drunken Master 2, Project A, & Peking Opera Blues) they were as advertised, better treatment of those films than any other versions I’ve come across by far. I was particularly impressed by Drunken Master 2, it never looked or sounded better, Bey Logan’s audio commentary track was very informative, all the extras were worth watching, really. So, yeah, HKR’s customer service/communication (or lack thereof) was ridiculous, but I did love the product I ended up getting.

HKR is currently way behind on orders because he’s a one man operation and he’s busting it finishing his release of the Killer. I’m waiting on some orders from around the same time. He recently made a post with a picture of a whole bunch of orders shipping out, in which he said “YOUR order is probably one of them.” I think you’ll get your order in the near future.

          • Dan says:

Thanks for the responses folks. That pretty much falls in line with everything else I’m reading. I don’t mind if it takes longer than normal. I just wish he would respond.

I’ve heard about this guy. Puts out some great product but his communication skills are non-existent. Not a good combination lol (and then he taunts people buy taking a photo with a stack of Blu-rays). WTF.

          • Ron says:

I hopped on to see if anyone would bring up the HKR version of Drunken Master II. Shout out to all you guys. As good as the HKR version is, I too will buy this 4K scanned Blu-Ray. Just hope this release will lead to more HK gems (and maybe one day even get a 4K extended special edition of “Showdown In Little Tokyo”)

  3. Ningen says:

Now all they need is Rumble in the Bronx uncut.

  4. martialaw says:

If anyone actually cares, HKR’s release are all bootlegs and are not sanctioned by the rights holders.

    • Dan says:

Oh for sure. I’m honestly surprised he’s been able to exist this long to be honest.

    • ToryK says:

Oh, it’s definitely not something I would normally buy – bootlegs are something I normally just do not do. When the rights-holders are being weird and it’s the only way to watch the film properly, however… Believe me, I’d rather put the money in the “right” hands, but I also want the right hands to respect the art and the audience.

  5. Aerosniff Someglue says:

I’ll never give one cent to a thief like that, even if his products are good.

Those who buy from him are killing real and honest labels like 88 Films, Arrow, Eireka, Third Window Films…who hire, you know, people to work legally and get paid… But as long as they get their oh so precious illegal
    editions…

    • JJ Bona says:

I agree, but to a point. If someone has a copy of The Big Boss II, I’m grabbing it. Unofficial or not.

      • ToryK says:

Right! If you have no other way to watch something, what is one to do? The HKR release of Drunken Master 2 is the only boot I own, and I’m all over this one, but I’m more disappointed in the handling of the film up to this point than I am myself.
