Legendary martial arts icon Jackie Chan (The Shadow’s Edge, The Foreigner) will soon begin work on Pawfect Agents, an upcoming action-comedy that re-teams Jackie with his Bleeding Steel director, Leo Zhang (Chrysanthemum to the Beast). Following the footsteps of 2024’s Panda Plan and its sequel, Pawfect Agents will be a live-action/CG hybrid feature.
The film – from LinKEY Sanxing and Zhang’s Shangjia Film companies, with Cappu Films handling sales – follows a veteran agent (Chan) on the verge of retirement who is pulled back into the field after the Sanxingdui Golden Mask – one of China’s most prized national treasures – is targeted by an international theft operation. The reluctant hero pairs with a technologically advanced spy dog on a chase across continents, from Europe back to China. The project draws inspiration from action spectacles that blend live-action performance with animated characters (via Variety).
Alongside Pawfect Agents, Jackie Chan has another project in the pipeline, Retired Cop (also being sold by Cappu Films). In it, he stars as a veteran Hong Kong officer on the verge of retirement who heads to Canada to reunite with his family, only to get drawn into one final showdown when a conspiracy puts his son in danger.
Production for Pawfect Agents is set to begin in October, with a theatrical release targeted for 2027. We’ll keep you updated on both of these projects as more news emerges.
Hot Take: Retired Cop sounds somewhat intriguing (maybe it could even be reworked into a swan song-style Police Story sequel?), but Pawfect Agents feels like it’s heading into Panda Plan territory. At 71, The Shadow’s Edge proves Jackie can still deliver in the right hands of a capable director that longtime fans will appreciate, so age really isn’t the issue. Either way, we’re still holding out hope for Rush Hour 4 and Armour of God 4.
