Today’s Deal on Fire is the Blu-ray for Ip Man: Kung Fu Master. This version of the Ip Man story stars Dennis To (Zombie 108), who portrays the Wing Chun grandmaster for a third time, following 2010’s The Legend is Born – Ip Man and 2018’s Kung Fu Big League.

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master harks back to Ip’s early days before the Communist Revolution in 1949. Ip, portrayed by Dennis To for the third time as the martial artist who famously tutored Bruce Lee, was then a police captain who was framed for the murder of a ruthless but honorable mobster, and targeted for vengeance by his dangerous daughter. Forced to quit the force, Ip soon also has to contend with the arrival of the Japanese army in Guangzhou.

Directed by Liming Li (who is also helmed Young Ip Man: Crisis Time), the film also stars Tong Xiaohu (Young Ip Man: Crisis Time), Yuan Li Ruoxin (The Cage of Time), Chang Qinyuan (Those Flowers), Zhao Xioguang (Eternal Wave), Ren Yu (Twilight Wars: Power Unit) and Michael Wong (Z Storm).

Next one: Ip Man x reptilian octopuses from Uranus.

  2. Andrew Hernandez says:

Amazon has the Blu Ray/DVD release date as March 16, 2021!

  3. Andrew Hernandez says:

I’m too impatient to wait for March, so I picked up the German DVD with no subtitles. Even without them, I had a general idea of what was going on, and the movie was just OK.

The Legend is Born: Ip Man is a movie I watch just as much as the Donnie Yen films, and it’s a shame that this one isn’t quite up to par. As Asian Film Strike points out, a lot of the movie is lifted from other Ip Man movies as well as other Donnie Yen films like the mediocre Legend of the Fist.

Disappointingly, Masked Ip Man barely makes an appearance and we’re instead told that all of his action happened off screen. Ip Man does get 3 burley brawls reminiscent of the ones in The Grandmaster and The Matrix Reloaded, two short but sweet sparring scenes with an old friend of his, and then the finale of the the first Ip Man movie is replicated him him vs and evil Japanese general.

The fights are decent, but they’re pretty unoriginal. Normally that doesn’t bother me, but I would have liked to see something different in this case. Meanwhile there’s a new movie called Ip Man: Crisis Time which has him playing John McClane in a university. It’s not gotten much praise so far, so we’ll see if Magnet shows interest in that as well.

Given their rich history, culture and folklore, Chinese films need to expand their scope of mythologized heroes a little beyond Wong Fei Hung and Ip Man. Yeah, we got Mulan this year, but Jesus, was that a steaming pile of shit!

To date we’ve got Blockbuster Donnie Yen Ip Man, Arty and Melancholic Wong Kar Wai Ip Man, Old Man Ip Man, Young Man Ip Man and now this…Another Young Man Ip Man?

Coming up…Ip Man the Animated Series? Are the Action Figures on sale yet?

  5. Aerosniff says:

The legend is born: Ip Man. Nice movie, but really not enough charisma and a story that pales when compared to Ip Man and the second best of them all, the REALLY underrated Ip Man: The final fight. And about the fight, the best ones will always be those featuring Sammo’s fight choregraphies.

  6. Nightrain says:

Coming soon. Ip man in the Hood!

  7. I found Ip Man; Kung Fu Master to be a complete disaster of a movie. Sure it has some decent fight scenes, but it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, and quite frankly, Dennis To doesn’t have the charisma to carry a movie the way that Donnie Yen did. Of all the movies to feature Ip Man as a character, this one was the worst.

    • Andrew Hernandez says:

Pretty sure Ip Man: Crisis Time will be the worst.

This movie though is so small, that there wasn’t much of anything to carry. Dennis To showed that he could be good in The Legend is Born and Woman Knight of Mirror Lake.

  8. Ska Martes says:

Finally watched this. Its kind of hilarious that they try to keep turning Ip Man into a fully fledged comrade. Theres only one law, the country’s law. Ok we get it, Ip man was born in Foshan but is actually Mao zedong’s half brother
