“The Monkey King 3” Chinese Theatrical Poster
In 2014, Soi Cheang Pou-Soi (SPL II) uncaged his first Monkey King film with Donnie Yen in the title role. In 2016, the director returned with a sequel that had Aaron Kwok replacing Yen as the lead. Then in 2018, Soi Cheang and Kwok returned for a third film.
This brings us to 2019 where we just received news from AFS that The Monkey King 4 is officially in-the-works. Currently, there is no word if Soi Cheang, Kwok or any of the previous cast members are returning, but given their track record, our bet is that the same team will be back for more.
In the meantime, we’ll be catching Kwok in the highly-anticipated John Woo-esque Project Gutenberg with Chow Yun-fat. Stay tuned!

I am just so excited they are going to bring these wonderful characters back for the fourth installment. I just love the way we get to see the past of these great beings brought to life on the silver screen as they had lived their lives and the great adventures they went on. These movies about these great beings up lift your soul and gives your heart harmony.
It’ll be Princess Iron Fan and Red Boy, surely. Hope it’s still coming.
They should keep on making it until they reach their destination, its 2021 and still the monkey king 4 hasn’t come out? Or has it?
My grandsons and I have watched all the monkey king movies and we are very excited about the 4th one, please keep us posted, thank you for bringing the best monkey king movies ever.
My boyfriend and I watched the trilogy and eagerly anticipate a 4th film. The vast improvement between film 1 and 2 dumbstruck us. We thoroughly appreciate the moments of levity thrown into the plot which humanizes the characters and give it a unique flare form the source material for today’s audiences. We hope the entirety of The Journey to the West can be portrayed in this franchise!
I have watched the whole old series of Journey to the West and the actor was impeccable in his portraying of the character Sun Wukong, they have brought back Journey to the West in this Epic film adaptation and I can say that the actors are portraying the characters perfectly well. Please keep the Spirit Alive and I cannot wait to see the new release.
It’s been 80 years (5 years) and still nothing. I’m guessing covid delayed the production and probably stop it completely…but here’s to hoping that the 4th one will still come someday.
