Jon Truei brings Tokusatsu back with ‘Secondary Education’

"Secondary Education" Movie Poster

"Secondary Education" Movie Poster

Justin Lin’s (Fast & Furious) YOMYOMF Network recently premiered Jon Truei’s science-themed, 90s Tokusatsu throwback short film called Secondary Education. And now, cityonfire is spreading the word about this crafty short film to our readers.

Secondary Education is essentially about three high school kids who find out during after school detention that their Chemistry teacher has been hiding a double secret life as a crime fighting Super Sentai Hero. They have to help him battle an escaped mutant lobster using principles from a Chemistry test that they failed, and in the process learn the value of science.

The comedic dialogue is fast-paced, the direction is tight and if you’re familiar with Kamen Rider, Ultraman or Super Sentai (better known to most as the Power Rangers), you’ll definitely appreciate the homage. Watch the 11-minute short now! If you want to see Secondary Education on a bigger screen, be sure to catch it at the Urban Action Showcase in November.

Watch the trailer for Kim Jee-Woon’s shoot ’em up ‘The X’

"The X" Theatrical Poster

"The X" Theatrical Poster

Kim Jee-Woon, the acclaimed director of I Saw The Devil and The Last Stand, has pumped out a new action film called The X. Unfortunately, it’s only a short film, but if you have any knowledge of Kim’s craft, there’s a great chance The X is going to be 30 minutes of pure awesomeness.

The X is the story of an agent named X (Kang Dong-won) who has been assigned to deliver a mysterious bag to a specific location, only to find that all hell is about to break loose. The X premiered at this year’s Busan International Film Festival, but hopefully we’ll see a DVD/Blu-ray release in the near future. For now, feast your eyes on the trailer.

So what’s next for Kim? A Hollyood movie called Coward. Read about it here.

Kim Jee-Woon is no ‘Coward’ when it comes to violence

"The Last Stand" Japanese Theatrical Poster

"The Last Stand" Japanese Theatrical Poster

Variety reports that Kim Jee-woon has signed on to direct a movie adaptation of Ed Brubaker’s acclaimed graphic novel, Coward. Kim is best known for his crafty, cult action films like A Bittersweet Life, The Good, the Bad, the Weird and the ridiculously violent I Saw The Devil. Earlier this year, Kim made his Hollywood directing debut with The Last Stand, which was hailed as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “comeback film.”

Here’s a description of the Coward graphic novel courtesy of Amazon: Leo is a professional pickpocket and legendary heist-planner. But there’s a catch with Leo: he won’t work any job that he doesn’t call all the shots on, he won’t allow guns, and the minute things turn south, he’s looking for any exit that won’t land him in prison. But when he’s lured into a risky heist, all his rules go out the window. Now Leo must come face-to-face with the violence he’s kept bottled up inside for 20 years, and nothing will ever be the same for him again.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about Coward. Until then, watch some Kim Jee-woon films. We recommend all of them. Also be sure and check out the trailer to his latest project The X, which is a short film that premiered at the 2013 Busan International Film Festival.
