A sequel to the James Wan-produced reboot of Mortal Kombat, a martial arts-thriller based on the highly-successful video game franchise of the same name, is currently in the works from New Line. And Simon McQuoid, who directed the reboot, will be back in the director’s chair!
New Line has enlisted the writing skills of Jeremy Slater, who is best known for penning Marvel/Disney+ series Moon Knight (via Deadline). The first film was written by Greg Russo (the upcoming Category 6), Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984), with a story by Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox).
The latest cast additions include Adelin Rudolph (Riverdale) as Kitana; Karl Urban (The Boys, Dredd) as Johnny Cage; Martyn Ford (Boyka: Undisputed) as Shao Kahn; Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as King Jerrod; Ana Thu Nguyen (The Spy Who Never Dies) as Queen Sindel; and Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) as Quan Chi.
There’s no official word on which cast members of the 2021 reboot will be returning, but it’s safe to assume that all surviving characters will be played by their respective actors.
The 2021 reboot starred Joe Taslim (The Night Comes for Us) as Sub-Zero; Ludi Lin (Black Mirror) as Liu Kang; Sisi Stringer (Bloody Hell) as Mileena; Mehcad Brooks (Glory Road) as Jackson “Jax” Briggs; Tadanobu Asano (Ichi The Killer) as Raiden; Jessica McNamee (The Meg) as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson (Bombshell) as Kano; Lewis Tan (Deadpool 2); Chin Han (The Dark Knight) as Shang Tsung; Hiroyuki Sanada (Royal Warriors) as Scorpion; Max Huang (Police Story: Lockdown) as Kung Lao; Elissa Cadwell (Aquaman stuntperformer) as Nitara; and Daniel Nelson (Godzilla vs. Kong) as Kabal.
Mortal Kombat 2 hits theaters on October 24, 2025. Until then, we leave you with the Trailer for the 2021 film:
Let me find out I just got all hyped watching the original movie trailer like I was 10 again. Yeahhhhh….buddy take my money.
Any idea when the official trailer will be release?
Any day, any minute. We’ll be sure to post it here as soon as we spot it!
My home town!!!! I hope they do the subject matter justice.
Great news! I was hoping that Mortal Kombat Legacy would eventually turn into a full length movie, but I’m happy about this.
I remember when it was rumored that Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais were in talks to be Scorpion and Sub Zero. I would’ve been cool with that if the characters were written to be Thai and Indonesian. It would be nice if they brought back some of the cast from Legacy along with more COF favorites.
Awesome for Joe! I would be more excited if Scorpion and Sub Zero are the stars instead of in supporting roles.
Doesn’t need an R. But they’re still hoping for that Deadpool money, I take it.
Doesn’t need an R, just needs to pretend that ‘97 sequel didn’t happen, like Batman Begins, I mean.
Interesting, wasn’t Ludi Lin in consideration for the role of Shang-Chi? It seems like this might be the consolation prize!
It’s a good consolation prize indeed! It’ll be interesting to see who joins the team. Philip Ng, Tom Wu, Amy Johnston, Taemi, Rina Takeda, someone from UFC, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Hope Asano’s practicing for that Baby Cart movie I keep trying to get out of him.
Tadanobu Asano is Raiden
Hiroyuki Sanada Scorpion
That is interesting. Don’t know the other and don’t care.
I wonder if Hiroyuki Sanada regrets passing on ‘John Wick 3’ now…
Well, Liu Kang turned into a dragon & Sonya Blade did her kiss of death to Cyrax in the sequel so… I think what he says about fatalities are wrong. So exited to see Hiroyuki return to a ninja role…
This looks amazing !
Very cool trailer but they spoiled a lot. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any unannounced characters in the film.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Joe Taslim sure know how to move around in that heavy looking armor!
I. CAN’T. STAND. THIS. AWEFUL. “ZIMMER-ONE-NOTE” THEME. MUSIC. ANYMORE.
I’ll download that movie for free and won’t watch it until the end anyway…SO WHY DO I CARE? Oh yeah, my life sucks almost as much as I do!
This looks promising. I like the the dedication to fifht choreography and the attention to making a good story. Looking forward to it
I risked my well-being watching Mortal Kombat in IMAX, but I was safe and the movie was a lot of fun. It’s kind of bittersweet getting the movie that most people wanted 25 years ago.
At 58 years old, Hiroyuki Sanada can still go! He kept up with Joe Taslim very nicely, and it was cool to see their differing fighting styles mesh well. The fight scenes were a great combination of grounded realism mixed in with appropriate wire-fu and the special effects enhanced the scenes instead of replacing them. It was a great mix of grappling, brawling, classic martial arts and even some wing chun for good measure.
It works as a standalone film and doesn’t force its audience to wait for a sequel to get unanswered questions, but it appropriately makes a sequel more enticing, and I look forward to seeing my favorite characters get brought to life again.
