Filming is complete for Dev Patel’s (Slumdog Millionaire, Hotel Mumbai) directorial debut, Monkey Man, which insiders have described as “John Wick in Mumbai”.
In Monkey Man, Patel play an unlikely hero who emerges from prison to take on a world enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values, and seeking revenge from those who took everything from him years before. The film is partly inspired by the Hindu myth about the deity Hanuman who is half man, half monkey (via Deadline).
The film – co-written by Patel along with Paul Angunawela (Keith Lemon’s Fit) and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – also stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Hardcore Henry), Sobhita Dhulipala (Psycho Raman) and Sikandar Kher (24: India).
According to FCS, the film’s action was spearheaded by stunt coordinator Udeh Nans (Beyond Skyline), with fight choreography by Brahim Chab (The Driver, Abduction).
Netflix recently nabbed worldwide rights the film for a 2022 release. Until then, we leave you with the Trailers for the franchise that’s influencing every action movie these days:

I still don’t understand why every movies want to be the next John Wick. Those movies weren’t that good. Chad Stahelski this, Chad Stahelski that.
It’s because they make money. And they’re (pssst) kinda cheap. So by declaring early on “we’re going for a “John Wick” thing” the future consumer knows to keep their hopes of a spectacle at a minimum but at least the action will be bloody and coherent. And then when they see it they can’t be disappointed and are more likely to recommend it to friends.
Not a John Wick fan at all. If I wanna watch one, I take The man from nowhere or A bittersweet life instead.
