Today, Eureka released a Blu-ray (Region B) for the The Skyhawk, a 1974 Golden Harvest Kung Fu classic from director Chung Chang-wha (The Devil’s Treasure, King Boxer). The film stars Kwan Tak Hing (The Strong of Wong Fei-Hung – Part 1), Carter Wong (The Magnificent), Wang In Sik (Fist of Unicorn), Sammo Hung (Lady Whirlwind) and Nora Miao (Bruce’s Deadly Fingers).

The Skyhawk is the kind of movie which opens up with kung fu legends Kwan Tak-Hing, Sammo Hung, and Carter Wong strolling down a countryside path together, an image which close to 50 years later is one which indelibly captures a moment in time which can never be re-created. It’s not long before we witness the equally iconic Korean hapkido master Whang In-shik unleash a flurry of devastating kicks, and all of this is crammed into the initial minutes before the opening credits have even appeared onscreen.

The real selling point of The Skyhawk is the return of Kwan Tak-Hing as the titular character Wong Fei-Hung. Tak-Hing first played Wong Fei-Hung in 1949’s The Strong of Wong Fei-Hung – Part 1, and would go onto play the character over 70 times.

Official details:

Kwan Tak-hing returns to his iconic role as Master Wong Fei-hung in this late-70s kung fu classic from director Jeong Chang-hwa (King Boxer).

Master Wong takes a new student (Carter Wong) under his wing after the young man is soundly beaten by a mercenary master (Hwang In-shik) skilled in hapkido. Meanwhile, Master Wong’s friend is being threatened by a local crime boss who wants to use his factory for opium-related shenanigans, and has hired the renegade hapkido master as his enforcer.

Eureka Classics is proud to present The Skyhawk in its UK home video debut, presented on Blu-ray from a brand new 2K restoration.
