On June 11, 2024, MPI Home Video is releasing a SteelBook for The Last Kumite on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray. The highly-anticipated actioner features cult martial arts icons Cynthia Rothrock (No Retreat, No Surrender 2), Kurt McKinney (No Retreat, No Surrender), Matthias Hues (Ultimate Justice), Michel Qissi (Kickboxer) and Billy Blanks (King of the Kickboxers).
The Last Kumite centers around Mathis Landwehr (Lasko) who takes part in the kumite for one final battle – for the life of his daughter.
The film also stars Abdel Qissi (Lionheart), David “Bolo Jr” Yeung (Painted Faces), Aurelia Agel (John Wick 4), Emilien De Falco (Undisputed 4) and YouTuber and all-round action fan, David Kurzhal aka Viking Samurai (via TAE).
Directing The Last Kumite is Ross W. Clarkson, who is perhaps best known for helming 2018’s Vixen, as well as his cinematography work in Ringo Lam’s 1999 thriller Victim and the 2016 Vietnamese actioner Tracer. Martial arts sensation Mike Moeller (One Million K(l)icks, Ultimate Justice) serves as stunt coordinator.
The Last Kumite is described as a retro-style action movie that captures the essence of 80s/90s martial arts classics. In fact, producer Sean David enlisted Paul Hertzog and Emmy Stan Bush (film composer and performer, respectively, for the title songs and soundtracks for both Bloodsport and Kickboxer) produced new music for The Last Kumite.
The project is also supported by YouTuber Oliver Harper, who’ll be lending his editing skills; and also by So Bad It’s Good’s Jason Brant.

It does look great. Especially with Mike Moller doing the stunts. But it’s strange that Cynthia is in another kickstarter project when the other one isn’t even finished yet. Hope it all works out.
Yep, everything about this seems suspicious. Cynthia Rothrock is the driving force behind ‘Black Creek’ and wanted to raise US$89,000 through the Kickstarter she created, while this one is asking for the equivalent of over US$160,000 and doesn’t even have a section explaining how the funds will be used! I’m out.
Hey Paul,
The executive producer Sean did talk about how some of the funds will be spent in his various interviews. For example, some of that money would of course go towards paying Paul Hertzog for the score. Some would go towards building the great Kumite set in Germany. Some for rounding up talent, etc…

I can not wait, all us martial art fans and others miss the old great movies. I am sure the Last Kumite will be the movie to get these old school movies back in production. Cant wait also to see Viking Samurai make is debut, a future star in the making maybe?

If this old school martial arts and action genre comes back, like if feel it will, then I do think I have a great chance to become a future star, especially after coming off projects like The Last Kumite, Warrior Island and more…
There are some other really talented individuals that are starting to come up as well, so the competition will be great for all of us in order to make sure we do our best and try to create something the audience can really get behind and enjoy!
I must have blanked out when it was announced that Mathis Landwehr was listed as the leading man. It’s interesting that he has a “introducing” credit since he’s been around for a while, and more people should have watched Kampfansage. (Quietly released direct to DVD as Challenger in the US.)
Mathis Landwehr should have been a huge star a long time ago, and I’m sure Mike Moller knows how to utilize someone just as agile as he is.

Nice looking trailer. It does seem to be trying to invoke the 80’s with its music and sound effects. Looking forward to how this and Black Creek turn out.
This, to me, looks Direct To Video in every possible way, I’ll probably watch it (or at least try to get through it) at some point if it’s streaming for free but it doesn’t look like anything I’d pay more than a dollar for. I can appreciate the effort to make an old fashioned martial arts movie but who’s the star? What name is supposed to get me excited about this? And the big final finishing move is a “judo chop”? This looks about as exciting to me as Viking Samurai’s “big debut fight” was last weekend.
Loooking like a Direct To Video was their intention.

What the fuck!! is this Blu-ray release bullshit!! It’s not the fucking 1980s get with the fucking program for!!! & release this shit on fucking data already!!! SERIOUS!!!

I forgot that this movie was available to rent, so I hopped on Vudu, and checked it out.
There were some things I liked in the movie, but overall, it ended up being unintentionally funny. I know people don’t expect Neil Simon quality from martial art films, but the acting and writing were awful.
I don’t know how much conversational English Mathis Landwehr knows, but his line delivery did not have conviction, and it was pretty constant with how most everyone awkwardly delivered their lines.
Theres a scene in the movie where the villain warns everyone not to contact the police, but then Kurt McKinney stupidly and indiscreetly goes into town asking where the police station is and then reports to the cops about what’s going on. You’d think he’d have put himself and his wife in danger, but it’s an overlong scene where the cops say there’s nothing they can do.
The other villain is Mike Derudder who may be good at screen fighting, but spends the whole movie trying too hard to be scary and intimidating, but acts like a laughable man-child. Stunt woman extraordinaire Monia Moula makes a rare appearance in front of the camera as the lone woman warrior, and it was good to see what she can do when Ana De Armas’ face isn’t digitally placed on her. I wish she would get more major action roles.
The fights themselves choreographed by Mike Moeller and company technically have good choreography for the most part, but are too short. That’s a real shame for a movie where the fighting is why we’re tuning in. The scenes of Mathis Landwehr training for the tournament are the best parts of the movie as they show that he may not be the acrobat from Kampfansage anymore, but he still has action chops.
Mathis even has a fight against a capoeirista which should have been something special, but ended too soon. I was expecting this movie to at least be like Bloodmoon where the acting and writing are awful, but the action is amazing, but it doesn’t get there unfortunately.
Just finished watching this and it’s enjoyable… I’m a huge horror movie fanatic first and I’ve sat through a lot of horror movies that strive to be love letters to Classic 80s horror that often times fail. This love letter Falls in line the awesome Lady bloodfight, sure it doesn’t bring anything new to the table but everything is there….questionable acting ✔ good fight scenes ✔ training montages set to appropriate inspirational music ✔ all It really needed was some female nudity but I digress.
