On September 28, 2021, Media Blasters is releasing the Blu-ray for Shunichi Nagasaki’s Black Belt (aka Kuro-Obi). This 2007 Japanese martial arts film (read our review) stars Akihito Yagi (High-Kick Girl!), Tatsuya Naka (Karate Girl) and Yuji Suzuki (Godzilla: Final Wars). For the first time, it will be presented from a new 4K scan.

If you ever decide to check this movie out, try not to watch it back-to-back with any other martial arts movies. If you do, Black Belt will expose just how light, unrealistic and cartoony those titles really are – all 99% of them.

The choreography in Black Belt consists of fights that appear to be as natural and realistic as they possibly could for the camera. As cut and dry as the sequences are, they’re so intense that you can feel the power.

Real Fights! Real Karate! Real Japan! In the 1930’s, three dedicated disciples – Taikan, Choei and Giryu – are taught by esteemed karate master Shibara atop a remote mountain dojo. When the military police try to seize control of the training hall, the three students defend their master and defeat the police with Choei sustaining a debilitating injury. On his deathbed, the master instructs his students to refine their skills and carefully choose the most worthy successor to inherit his prized black belt. The only two viable candidates, Taikan and Giryu, each set on their individual paths to hone their martial skills and fully absorb their master’s teachings until the fateful day when they will meet again to put their skills to the ultimate test.
