Sex and the Emperor | Blu-ray (88 Films)

On September 14, 2026, 88 Films is releasing the Blu-ray (Region A/B) for Sex and the Emperor, a 1994 Hong Kong Category III film from Sherman Wong Jing-Wa (Queen of Underworld).

Sex and the Emperor is a lavish and provocative entry in Hong Kong’s infamous Category III cinema, blending historical drama, erotic spectacle, and darkly comic intrigue into a decadent portrait of power and excess within the imperial court. Directed by Sherman Wong, the film dives headfirst into the hedonistic underbelly of palace life, where politics, desire, and cruelty intertwine behind closed doors

Told through the perspective of Li, a palace servant who secretly retains his manhood despite posing as a eunuch, the story unfolds as he becomes an indispensable tool of the emperor’s whims. Whether aiding in voyeuristic indulgences, navigating the treacherous politics of concubines and rivals, or executing covert missions beyond the palace walls, Li finds himself caught between survival and complicity in a world ruled by unchecked authority. As alliances shift and tensions rise, the film reveals a court driven as much by lust and manipulation as by power and control

Unapologetically explicit yet laced with satire, the film exemplifies the anything-goes energy of 1990s Hong Kong exploitation cinema, where historical settings provided a backdrop for boundary-pushing storytelling. While its erotic content is front and center, Sex and the Emperor also offers a cynical commentary on hierarchy, hypocrisy, and moral decay, aligning it with contemporaries like Sex & Zen while pushing even further into outrageous territory

This Blu-ray edition from 88 Films presents the film in a new 2K restoration from the original negative, preserving its rich period detail and stylized visuals. The original Cantonese mono soundtrack has been remastered and is accompanied by newly translated English subtitles, alongside an English dub option for alternate viewing. The release also features an audio commentary by Asian cinema expert David West, providing context on the film’s place within the Category III landscape and Hong Kong film history

Additional extras include If This Castle A-Rocking, a critical appreciation by James Mudge, an English title sequence, image gallery, and original Hong Kong trailer. The package is completed with an O-ring slipcase featuring newly commissioned artwork by Sean Longmore and a reversible sleeve, making this a comprehensive and collectible edition of a notorious cult title.

The film stars Yvonne Yung Hung (The Hero of Swallow), Sung Boon-Chung (Too Many Ways to Be Number One), Leung Si-Ho (Miracles), Jimmy Wong Shu-Kei (Don’t Tell My Partner), Stuart Ong (Evil Cat), Kingdom Yuen King-Tan (Wing Chun), Julie Lee Wa-Yuet (The Untold Story), Chin Gwan (1941 Hong Kong on Fire) and Wong Yat-Fei (Kung Fu Genius).
