In May 2021, Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery will start filming The Boondocks Saints Part III with franchise director/creator/writer Troy Duffy.
“The fans have loved these characters for 20 years,” Duffy said. “They use terms of endearment like ‘the Brothers’ or ‘the Boys.’ We left them in jail at the end of Boondock 2 and fans want to know what happened to them. Norman and Sean have been a driving force to keep this franchise on track and break some new ground story-wise. The fans have been waiting. They literally ask about it daily, and I am really excited to be working with Impossible Dream to make Boondock III a reality” (via Deadline).
The Boondocks Saints Part III is being produced by Shaun Redick (Get Out), Yvette Yates Redick (SlantEd Comedy), Don Carmody (Good Will Hunting) and director Troy Duffy, who also acts as writer with some help from Flanery and Reedus.
Back in 2014, plans for a third film, then-titled The Boondock Saints 3: Legion, was moving forward, but ultimately fell into production hell. The Boondock Saints 3: Legion would have focused on the McManus boys behind bars along with a cult of obtuse people outside the prison walls who take on their crime fighting mantle. In addition, the film would also look at the origins of the McManii (intertwined prequel/sequel, a la The Godfather 2?) (via Collider).
Side note: If you want to see a great film that has Troy Duffy’s name in the credits, check out Overnight. It’s an extremely entertaining documentary about the rise and fall of Duffy himself – before, during and after – the making of the original The Boondock Saints. If any of you COF readers out there buy or rent this documentary and end up disliking it, I’ll personally refund your money.
We’ll keep you updated on The Boondocks Saints Part III as we learn more. For now, we’ll leave you with the Trailer for Overnight:
I liked the original film, but the sequel was definitely a disappointment. Did not live up to its trailer. As for why I dug the original, it was basically everything The Matrix should’ve been, in terms of gunplay.
I have a feeling Daryl will be gone by Season 3….
