Action legend Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Royal Warriors) is set to star in Prime Video‘s limited series, Blade Runner 2099, which will take place after the 2017’s Blade Runner 2049.
Showrunner of the project, Silka Luisa (Halo, Strange Angel) is producing, Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun, Top Boy, The Changeling) is directing the first two episodes (via Deadline). There are currently no other casting details and plotline is being kept under wraps.
As an actress Yeoh has made an impact in every decade she’s been active. In the 80’s she kick-started the Girls with Guns genre in her first starring role with Yes, Madam!. In the 90’s she came out of retirement and proceeded to give both Jackie Chan and James Bond a run for their money, co-starring along side Chan in Police Story 3: Supercop, and being the first Asian Bond girl in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies. In the 2000’s she’d star in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and in doing so introduced the wuxia genre to the world in a way which no other film has before or since, and in the 2010’s she featured in the first Hollywood movie to have a leading cast consisting entirely of Asians with the (appropriately titled) Crazy Rich Asians. Of course, in 2022, Yeoh once again left her mark on the 2020’s by headlining Everything Everywhere All at Once, which earned her an Oscar.
We’ll keep you updated on Blade Runner 2099 as we learn more. For now, we leave you with Trailers to the first two films:
Its a shame Yeoh hasn’t been able to capitalise on her Oscar success with a great movie follow up. Instead she’s been in ok-ish TV shows which get cancelled after one season (American Born Chinese / The Brothers Sun) Hopefully this show lasts longer than a season
I’m sure after Everything Everywhere and winning the Oscar, she wanted to recharge her batteries. Plus she’s been busy getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She’ll probably want to choose her next feature length film carefully.
Were she supposed to shoot a film this summer with some French director?
