The Jon Turteltaub-directed (National Treasure) 2018 movie (read our review) revolved around the threat of a Megalodon, the titular Meg, who terrorizes people off of the coast of China.

Taking over directing duties for Turteltaub is Ben Wheatley, who is perhaps best known for 2015’s High-Rise and 2016’s Free Fire.

    No Li BB this time!

  2. Guy Don says:

I stopped watching this … after a few xenophobic anti Japanese sentences.
I won’t waste a second on this essential sequel.

And what is Wu Jing doing in this thing?
Oh yeah, they wanna make a killing in China’s box office…not a bad idea since Jing is the biggest movie star there by a huge margin.

  3. Ouarf says:

Will it have as many anti Japanese shots than the first one? I threw it away after about 10 minutes.

    Another essential sequel…

And of course, Wu Jing, China’s biggest movie star by a huge margin, has not been hired to make a killling at the box-office there…

  4. Ska Martes says:

Meg 2 aka Shark vs communism

    • Aerosniff Someglue says:

Yeah, sure… Since they expect this sequel to do, like the first one, a large part of its worldwide box-office in…China!

  5. Kevin tran says:

Looks exciting enough to watch. Wu Jing first big role in a American movie. He going the Donnie Yen route. Making movies in both world.

  6. Typo says:

It’s a coproduction between USA and China. Like Mario.

  7. Andrew Hernandez says:

I had a good time with this one.

The Meg had a fun factor, but was trying to be a more “serious” movie. The Meg 2 embraces the campiness and goes out of its way to be a large budget B-film. Before, Jason Statham was a rescue diver with marine biology experience. Now, he’s gone back to action hero mode where he’s beating people up and doing parkour along with giving physics the middle finger like in Transporter 2.

In spite of the campiness, the movie domes veer off into “too stupid” territory. Considering how the main cast’s friends died in the last film, and continue to die here, they do make a lot of insensitive jokes which make it seem like they’ve learned nothing.

With this being a Chinese co-production, I’m sure Li Bingbing’s controversy made it easy for the producers to give her a disrespectful exit with no explanation. Is she a pariah now? It was established in the last film that going through the Trench created an opening for the Megalodons to emerge. Why would they do that again and make the opening bigger? They make the same mistakes as the people from the Jurassic movies!

It’s also been established that if a person is trapped or missing in the Trench, and there’s only a few seconds to spare, that you can’t go back and get them because then you and everyone else will die too. But characters disregard that as well.

One of the characters even gets pressured into trying to kill her friend, and then when confronted with other creatures leaves another friend to die, and no one says anything about this.

Wu Jing doesn’t get as many action beats as Statham, but he makes the most out of his role and is prominently featured. He comes across as very care free and good natured. It was a sin to not have him and Statham get a decent fight scene with each other though. There could have been an excuse for it.

If this movie does well, I’m sure the producers will just as loosely adapt the other books into something over the top. Especially when the 4th book introduces a Liopleurodon.

    • You almost have me tempted to check this one out Andrew, it kind of sounds a little similar to what ‘Crank 2’ was to ‘Crank’ (taking a ridiculous concept, then making it even more ridiculous!).

I think you may be mistaking Li Bingbing for Fan Bingbing though, it was the latter who became embroiled in the whole yin-yang contract scandal to avoid higher tax payments back in mid-2018. Li Bingbing on the other hand (as far as I’m aware) has remained controversy free.

      • Andrew Hernandez says:

I knew I must have made a mistake with both actors. I typed “Li Bingbing news” on the search engines, and only got results for Fan. I know Li is in Ordinary Hero now, but it would seem strange that she’d turn down Meg 2 for it.

Her absence in The Meg 2 makes it seem like the producers had zero respect for her and her character, so they must have also confused her for Fan.
