Director Kensuke Sonomura returns with Bad City (read our review), his follow up to his 2019 cult hit debut, Hydra. Sonomura is perhaps best known for his work as action director for the Resident Evil games Donnie Yen’s Iceman: The Time Traveller, John Woo’s Manhunt and Baby Assassins.
Kaiko City is plagued with poverty and crime. When a corrupt businessman decides to run for mayor and starts eliminating opponents from the rival mafia, a former police captain serving time for murder is secretly released and put in charge of a special task force to arrest him.
For Bad City, Sonomura enlists the star power of Hitoshi Ozawa (Score, Dead or Alive) to pay homage to V-Cinema (non-theatrical, direct-to-video titles that dominated the genre film market in Japan in the 1980s).
11/10/23 | Invisible Alien
Earth’s space base captured a mysterious set of signals that scientists believed came from another civilization in the universe, called Messenger. In order to explore this alien civilization, they sent an exploration spacecraft called “Deep Space”. 150 years later, the interstellar exploration spacecraft “Deep Space” that mysteriously disappeared , suddenly appeared in low Earth orbit. The Human Space Agency set up a temporary team to investigate and question the only survivor.
Directed by Jintao Lu and Dawei Zhang, this 2021 sci-fi adventure stars Wu Jiao (Trident), Xia Wang (13 Needles) and Shengwen Ruan (Shadows and Echoes).
11/17/23 | Avengement
Obviously, not to be confused with Scott Adkins film of the same name! Political tensions surround the establishment of the West Factory in this 2021 action film set during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty.
Avengement is directed by Gengxi Li and stars Xiang He (Police Story: Lockdown), Ying Wang (The Marriage Certificate) and Xiaofei Zhou (Ip Man 4: The Finale).
11/24/23 | The Legend and Hag of Shaolin
From Zhang Dicai, the director of Giant Python, comes The Legend and Hag of Shaolin, a 2021 martial arts actioner that stars Gu Shangwei (Mulan Legend), Vincent Zhao (Kung Fu League), Jingpei Zhao (The Secret Service) and Yang Yunran (Two-Faced Fox).
His name was Hong Xiguan. Legendary master from Southern Shaolin and Hung Ga school’s founder. In this film Hong is a young monk who carried the treasure map of the Ming Dynasty that Master Cai Jiuyi entrusted to him before his death. In the process of fighting against different enemies such as the forces of Wu Sangui, the scum of Heaven and Earth, and the Witch of White Lotus, Hong Xiguan gradually integrated Qi Jiajun Kungfu, Shaolin Kungfu, and Guangdong local boxing in the late Ming Dynasty, creating the “fighting world” Hung Ga.
