Martial arts star Vincent Zhao (Kung Fu League, Unity of Heroes) has demonstrated his skills in countless film and TV projects – both traditional kung fu and modern day action – and while The Blade, Black Sheep Affair and True Legend have been his highlights, he’s often been shortchanged by many projects and at times fallen foul of politics such as his departure from Donnie Yen’s Special ID.
With that said, Zhao is taking a sizable amount of control with Counter Attack, a project he’s not only starring in, but also directing. Co-stars include Jiang Yiyi (Once Upon a Time in Shanghai) and Lu Peng (The Destiny of White Snake).
The film is being described as a “military action” type film, somewhere along the lines of Wolf Warrior, Wolf Warrior 2, Operation Red Sea and Operation Mekong.
Don’t miss the film’s New English-subtitled Trailer below, ahead of its February 25, 2021 domestic release date:

Clock in for the D-grade CGI explosions, stick around for Vincent Zhao’s English line delivery.
I’m hoping for more Wolf Warrior 2 than the predecessor. I’ll tolerate some dodgy special effects just as long as there’s some good fight choreography.
Honestly, I haven’t been impressed with Vincent Zhao at all. I loved True Legend and I liked God of War, but everything else that I’ve seen him in has been less than memorable. I’m not saying that he’s not talented, but he’s not leading actor material. He doesn’t have the charisma or presence to carry a movie like Donnie Yen or Jet Li. The last three movies that I saw him in, Kung-Fu League, Unity of Heroes, and Warriors of the Nation were all god-awful cookie-cutter tripe.
Zhao’s heyday was in the 90’s, and most of his output from this era is worth watching. He took over from Jet Li as Wong Fei Hung in ‘Once Upon a Time in China IV’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in China V’, as well as the 1995 TV series (all of which are far superior too ‘Unity of Heroes’ and ‘Warriors of the Nation’). His other work with Tsui Hark, ‘Green Snake’ and ‘The Blade’ are also both classics.
On a sidenote, his debut was facing off against Jet Li as the villain in ‘Fong Sai Yuk’ (and he should have fought Donnie Yen as the villain in ‘Special ID’, but he left in the middle of filming after arguing with Yen over changes made to the script).
Chiu Man-cheuk (sorry, Vincent Zhao) sucks. Except in four/five movies in the 90’s (we know which ones). Just tried yesterday to see True legend (Uk Blu-Ray) but I stoppe after about an hour (too bad because Andy On was cool, the fights too, etc.), because the whole “another dimension” in horrible CGI, the boring repetition of scenes (I train with two guys in a bad Playstation 2 game, I come back at home, I train again, etc.), not enough Andy On,…but the biggest problem is that Chiu…sorry, Vincent, has about as much charisma, screen presence as a dead rat. I’ll boycott every movie he’s in from now on…except the few with him I have from the 90’s (thanks HK VIDEO)…
I think I know which 90s classics you’re referring to: Body Weapon and Fist Power.
