RELEASE DATE: September 9, 2024
On September 9, 2024, 88 Films is releasing the Blu-ray for The Shadow Boxing (aka The Spiritual Boxer Part II), a 1979 Shaw Brothers kung fu movie directed by Lau Kar-leung (Eight Diagram Pole Fighter)
From the legendary Lau Kar-leung comes one of his finest – and wildest – rides, following a pair of very special undertakers who transport dead bodies by magical means. But their latest trip is proving tricky; it’s bad enough that a strong-willed young woman has invited herself along for the ride but, even more awkwardly, one of the corpses might not actually be dead…
Pretty much inventing the kung fu horror-comedy, and a huge influence on later films like Encounter of the Spooky Kind and Mr. Vampire, The Shadow Boxing stars Gordon Liu and features the sort of action only the great Lau could serve up.
The film also stars Wong Yu (Mercenaries from Hong Kong), Cecilia Wong Hang-Sau (Stranger from Shaolin), Lau Kar-Wing (Shatter), Lee Hoi-Sang (Bruce and the Iron Finger), Norman Tsui Siu-Keung (Seeding of a Ghost), Wilson Tong Wai-Shing (When Taekwondo Strikes) and Wong Ching-Ho (Chinatown Kid).

I agree. I want to see more. Marco polo and Treasure Hunters next
88 Films messed up this release – supposed to be Mandarin mono but on my disc its 100%Cantonese
That’s good, it’s a Cantonese movie
Whats the cut off point ? When old school kungfu transitioned from Mandarin to Cantonese? Cos they released Shaolin Mantis (1978, only 1 year earlier than Spiritual Boxing ) in Mandarin only. Doesn’t matter. Just give me both Cantonese and Mandarin tracks and let me decide which one i prefer. And don’t lie on your website/packaging. 88 films are usually 4 stars out of 5 solid but this one takes a rare L.
Why do people always assume someone is lying instead of making a genuine error?
With Shaws its complicated as they moved to Cantonese kung fu comedy movies with Shadow Boxing in 1979, but they continued making Mandarin only wu xias. Chang Cheh’s Venom pictures remained Mandarin only as well.
Why do people need to defend companies that are run for profit but under deliver / false advertise? Its not like its the star wars project4k77 team who are preserving history for non profit.
The above wasn’t directed at you ….there was some other dude that was defending 88 films crap release of Holy Virgin and using school playground logic of well you can’t do any better so shut up. Apparently even as a customer I am not within my rights to criticize a substandard release.
Out of interest how did you confirm that Spiritual Boxing was released in Cantonese in HK cinemas back in 1979? Is there an online resource I can use myself?
