I’m upset at the reports that the movie has been changed so that Mark Wahlberg will be headlining. The damn producers don’t think a woman and Indonesian guy can carry a blockbuster.
This choice was also made before Rousey lost her fight with Holly Holm. I’m sure that made the producers feel better.
How did the cast find time? Iko Uwai has Beyond Skyline and Triple Threat, Rousey has been getting ready for WWE, and Wahlberg is always in another movie every week it seems.
I hope Uwai and Rousey have good screen time.
I’m worried about this one, to be honest. The movie is supposed to come out in 5 months and we haven’t even seen a trailer or clip. This is the ‘Solo’ of martial arts movies!
After watching Beyond Skyline – which was honestly pretty damn amazing at parts – I sincerely wish Frank Grillo had been cast in the film instead of Mark Wahlberg. Grillo has way more action star cred at this point. (I’m not sure if many people watched it but Grillo’s Netflix movie, The Wheelman, was terrific too)
That said, I’ve really enjoyed Peter Berg’s output as of late, and if nothing else the man knows how to shoot action sequences. Fingers crossed this turns out to be good.
Oh yes, Peter Berg is fantastic shooting action. That makes me wish it was just Uwai and Rousey since he’d put a unique focus on them.
With Wahlberg, I know they have a good rapport, but w’ve seen it already.
It seems like the studio was more concerned with having a “safe” box office star. As for a trailer, who knows? Have new trailers popped up for movies coming out in 5 months before?

Rousey is cringe. Nothing about her persona is appetizing. Do not need to see her on the big screen.

OK, this looks pretty cool. I never had anything against Wahlberg and he seems to be into it here, but I still wish it was someone else.
I’m concerned that they didn’t show Rhonda Rousey in action or talking. I hope it’s not just a glorified extra role. It’s interesting that Iko Uwais is ambiguous with whether he’s a hero or villain.

And I guess the ladies finally get to see Iko have a fight scene in his briefs, ha!

I like the new trailer. But where’s Rhonda’s fight scenes? Was her role diminished because she’s busy in WWE?
I meant to watch Mike 22 earlier, but was sidetracked. All in all, the movie is just OK.
As I hoped, Iko Uwais steals the show and his fight scenes are the highlight of the movie. Lateef Crowder was an assistant action director, and they even got to fight for a few seconds which I cheered for.
Sam Medina from the new Kickboxer movies is the villain here. It’s nice to see him with a better role.
Ronda Rousey has decent screen time and gets to shoot some people, but she unfortunately doesn’t have fight scenes. I suspect her role was condensed because of her WWE commitments. A big fight with her vs Iko Uwais would have given this movie a higher score.
Where the movie fails is that Wahlberg plays an ADD/bipolar afflicted shit-head who doesn’t have his multiple conditions under control. The movie tries introducing him as being “gifted,” but he isn’t. He’s just good at his job in spite of his disorders.
When he’s not in action, he just yells at everyone and tells them what to do with no conviction. The movie is self aware that his character is an asshole, but the film makers fail to do anything compelling with him.
I would have been happy if he played the same character from The Corruptor, Shooter, or Lone Survivor, but instead I hoped he would get shot before his team mates. Iko also steals the show in this case since he’s calm and collected through the picture.
This should have been a fun action flick, but the movie has a pretty dour and cynical tone throughout. This combined with the movie’s “our nation is the best” message makes Mile 22 feel like the Hollywood version of Dante Lam’s Operation films.
The movie even has the nerve to sequel bait the audience at the end and act like this will be a multi-film franchise. I don’t know how it does that considering how many characters get killed off.
Also, Iko is given an extremely cringe worthy line that’s an inside joke at Walhberg’s expense. (And it has to do with the plot twist!) I couldn’t believe it.
Thanks for the review, man! I’ve heard that the editing during the action scenes is really scattershot and incoherent. Did you feel like Iko got to show off his moves or did the editing totally ruin his fight scenes?
All in all, I felt that the camera work and editing showed off the fight choreography well.
There were a few moments of shaky cam and quick edits, but I felt like they added to the claustraphobic and chaotic nature of the scenes, and didn’t make them incomprehensible.
Although with Wahlberg, his one fight scene was horribly filmed and edited, which didn’t make sense since he’s shown to be capable of decent screen fighting in The Big Hit and Shooter.
