Entertainment tycoon Run Run Shaw, who was best known for co-founding the Shaw Brothers Studio and Hong Kong’s TVB – has died of cancer at the age of 107.
According to scmp.com: Shaw attracted top talents to the station, the city’s largest film studio and television broadcaster, ushering in what many call the golden age of TV entertainment in Hong Kong. In addition, Shaw was also a philanthropist who donated billions to charity, schools and hospitals.
To cityonfire.com, Shaw’s presence will live through film’s like Come Drink with Me, The One Armed Swordsman and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Our condolences go out to Run Run Shaw’s family and friends.
I actually only recently started watching Shaw Brothers movies. I had been watching Hong Kong movies for many years and saw Return to the 36th Chamber about a year or two ago. A few months ago, without previously watching any other SB movies, I bought 4 DVD’s (36th Chamber, Mad Monkey, Martial Club, and The Heroic Ones). I decided to buy them without watching them because I was amazed by the vast amount of love SB movies get. I loved all of them and will be buying many more later. Learning about Run Run Shaw dying is sad to hear, but I and many others will continue to enjoy his movies. R.I.P.
Run Run Shaw was responsible for helping to usher in a different kind of movie and viewers are forever grateful. For those who have experienced “the Shaw Brothers” all you need to do is mention the brothers and watch a fan break into a big grin and begin to enthusiastically talk about his or her favorite Shaw Brothers film.
R.I.P. Run Run Shaw. And Thank You.
As far as I’m concerned, we’ve lost one of the masters of the genre.
RIP forever ! the Shaw brothers will be remembered and their films for eternity.
