The long-awaited ‘Face/Off’ sequel is now without a director, so maybe it’s time to bring John Woo back for another round!

The long-anticipated sequel to Face/Off has hit a major setback. Although the plan is still to reunite Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, the director who had been attached to the project for years has officially stepped away.

Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong, Death Note, The Guest) is no longer set to direct the follow-up to the 1997 action classic. With his busy schedule and delays, Paramount seems to be bringing in new creative voices. (via Collider).

Wingard’s planned sequel, penned by his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett, was set to focus on the children of Castor Troy (Cage) and Sean Archer (Travolta), fated to face off against each other. Spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the original: Barrett has suggested that Castor Troy may not have actually died, which explains Cage’s return.

The original film – directed by Hong kong action auteur John Woo (Hard Boiled) – centered on an FBI agent (Travolta) who undergoes a facial transplant surgery to take on the physical appearance of a terrorist (Cage).

With Wingard out of the picture, maybe Paramount will bring John Woo back in? Even at 79, Woo remains as active as ever, having worked on 2023’s Silent Night, the 2024 remake of The Killer, and his upcoming gangster film Gambino with his Face/Off star, Nicolas Cage.

We’ll be sure to update you as we learn more. For now, we leave you with the original film’s classic Trailer:

I thought the Face/Off reboot was Will Smith’s Gemini Man…

As the saying goes “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” sad sad day for classics.

    Another one to boycott. Next!

No Woo, no Cage and No Travolta?

I’m struggling to see the point. This will likely be a retread that gets shelved by the suits at Paramount.

The original film is currently free on YouTube.

I don’t know about this one. I would have been more excited about it 10 years ago, but I hope this would succeed. Adam Wingard has proven he knows his action with his Godzilla/Kong films, and The Guest had some good action moments.

I do hope he knows how to incorporate Woo’s techniques.

You are too early with your april fools joke

The more I think about this, the more concerned I get. The stars of the original aren’t going to be the stars this time, they’ll be pushed aside and probably be presented as not so great, and I can’t envision them doing Woo styled action at 60 and 70.

The last watchable movies Travolta did were Savages and Killing Season, and aside from American Crime Story on TV, he’s done nothing but shitty DTV movies and embarrassing commercials. I can’t see him being passionate here.

I’d rather this movie star completely new characters with no connection or involvement of the originals.

This is never gonna happen. It was a dumb idea in the first place.
A couple of fat old men chasing each other around, shooting guns with CGI muzzle flashes? No, thanks.
