The early 70’s was a changing time for kung-fu cinema both in Hong Kong and Taiwan. While the 60’s had been dominated by the wuxia genre, the 70’s kicked off with Jimmy Wang Yu unleashing The Chinese Boxer, popularising empty hand combat and paving the way for the likes of Bruce Lee in The Big Boss a year later. With tastes changing from thrusts of the sword to punches in the face, so directors also course corrected to ensure they weren’t left behind. Taiwanese auteur Joseph Kuo was one such director. Having started his directorial career in 1958, Kuo spent much of the next 10 years helming dramas and comedies, however in 1968 he released his first martial arts movie, a wuxia titled The Swordsman of All Swordsmen. It proved to be a box office hit, and remains Kuo’s most commercially successful production, setting him on the path to be the popular kung-fu movie director most fans know him as today.

Kuo would go on to crank out a further 12 wuxia flicks after The Swordsman of All Swordsmen, spanning 1968 through to 1972, before he realised it was time to drop the swords and embrace the fists. The type of movie that emerged became known as the basher – still several years away from the complex and intricate Peking Opera influenced choreography in the latter part of the decade, the action in bashers was defined by its scrappiness, and reliance on opponents Continue reading

“The Old Master” Theatrical Poster

Director: Joseph Kuo
Cast: Yu Jim-Yuen, Bill Louie, David Pedernera, Wang Yung-Sheng, Starr Hester, Ng Siu-Nam, Pau Ga-Chung, Hui Man-Yui, Chi Fu-Chiang, Yuen Hung
Running Time: 90 min.

By Paul Bramhall

After the success of 1978’s double whammy of Snake in the Eagles Shadow and Drunken Master, filmmakers were falling over themselves to find the next Jackie Chan and replicate the kung-fu comedy formula. In 1979 the onslaught was already in full flow, from Yuen Shun-Yi in Dance of the Drunken Mantis to Billy Chong in Crystal Fist, and countless others in-between. While each cash-in had varying levels of success, one man decided to think a little more outside the box than his peers, and that man was Taiwanese indie auteur Joseph Kuo. While others attempted to mould new talent based on replicating Jackie Chan’s comedic kung-fu shenanigans, Kuo came from left of field with the idea of casting Chan’s Peking Opera teacher, Yu Jim-Yuen, in his own movie.

Such minor issues like the fact Jim-Yuen was already 74, and that he’d retired to the U.S. where he was living in Los Angeles, were simply obstacles to be overcome. This was Jackie Chan’s teacher! Of course for those kung-fu aficionados out there, it’s a well-known fact that he was also the teacher of Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Corey Yuen, and far too many others to list here (and for those wondering, in Perking Opera it was tradition for students to take on the family Continue reading

The 5 Most Popular Japanese Weapons Used in Modern Film

Japanese culture and weaponry have long fascinated audiences around the globe. Modern films, whether they are Hollywood blockbusters or Japanese cinema, often incorporate these elements to bring an extra layer of authenticity or exoticism to the story.

Japanese culture and weaponry have long fascinated audiences around the globe. Modern films, whether they are Hollywood blockbusters or Japanese cinema, often incorporate these elements to bring an extra layer of authenticity or exoticism to the story. Here are the five most popular Japanese weapons featured in modern film.

1. Katana

No list of popular Japanese weapons in film can begin without the iconic katana. This long, single-edged sword is emblematic of the samurai, the elite warrior class in feudal Japan. True katanas are not just weapons but symbols of honor, discipline, and artistry. Films like “Kill Bill,” “The Last Samurai,” and countless samurai movies have made the katana an almost mythical object, representing the ultimate in swordsmanship and martial skill.

Signature Features:

  • Curved, slender, single-edged blade
  • Traditionally made with multiple layers of folded steel
  • Often used in combination with a smaller sword or dagger, like the wakizashi

2. Shuriken

Commonly known as “throwing stars,” shuriken are small, bladed objects used for throwing, stabbing, or slashing. They gained international fame largely through the genre of ninja movies. Films like “Ninja Assassin” and even animated features like “Naruto” have popularized the shuriken as a stealthy, long-range weapon.

Signature Features:

  • Made from iron or steel
  • Variety of shapes including star-shaped, spike-shaped, and circular
  • Used for distraction, harassment, or incapacitation rather than lethal force

3. Nunchaku

Popularized globally by Bruce Lee, but deeply rooted in Japanese culture, nunchaku are traditional Okinawan weapons consisting of two sticks connected by a chain or rope. They’ve been featured in numerous films across various genres, from martial arts films to comedies like the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Signature Features:

  • Two wooden or metal rods
  • Connected by a chain or rope
  • Requires great skill to use effectively without injuring oneself

4. Yumi (Japanese Longbow)

The yumi, or the asymmetrical longbow, has been a significant weapon in Japanese history, especially during the times of the samurai. While not as commonly depicted in film as the katana, movies like “13 Assassins” and “The Twilight Samurai” have showcased the yumi as a weapon of both war and ceremonial significance.

Signature Features:

  • Asymmetrical shape, with a longer limb above the grip and a shorter one below
  • Traditionally made from bamboo and wood
  • Used both on foot and horseback

5. Sai

Another weapon originating from Okinawa, the sai, is a three-pronged truncheon that has gained pop-culture fame primarily through characters like Elektra in the Marvel Universe and Raphael from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” The sai is primarily used for stabbing and trapping other weapons but can also be effectively employed for blunt strikes.

Signature Features:

  • Three-pronged metal baton
  • Often used in pairs
  • Excellent for defensive tactics, including trapping opponents’ weapons

Conclusion

The intrigue surrounding Japanese weaponry extends far beyond its cultural origins, reaching a global audience captivated by their unique designs and the skills required to wield them. Modern film has played a significant role in this, making weapons like the katana, shuriken, nunchaku, yumi, and sai not just household names, but icons in the world of cinematic storytelling.

What Are the Cardinal Rules of Gun Safety?

Are you thinking about picking up weapons and getting involved in firearms?

In today’s ever-changing world, you must know how to use firearms safely. A lot of people believe firearms are meant to be brandished without any safety precautions. However, that’s far from the truth.

If you want to take part in target shooting or firearms competition, you should live by these cardinal rules of gun safety. That way, you’ll reduce the chance of harming yourself or others while using guns.

So, keep reading to learn everything you have to know about gun safety.

Use the Safety Mechanisms

The cardinal rules of gun safety are crucial for anyone who owns or handles a firearm. These rules are essential for the use of safety mechanisms.

The first cardinal rule is always to treat a gun as if it is loaded. This means always keeping the safety on and handling the gun with care and caution.

The second rule is never pointing a gun at anything you do not intend to shoot. This includes keeping the safety on and pointed in a safe direction when handling and storing the firearm.

Store Firearms Securely

This means keeping your gun locked up in a safe or locked cabinet, with ammunition stored. The safe should be made of strong, quality materials and stored securely, out of reach from children or intruders.

Keep Ammunition Separate

Keeping ammunition separate means that when you are not actively using your gun, the ammunition should be stored in a different location. This not only prevents any accidental discharge of the firearm but also ensures that unauthorized individuals do not have access to both the gun and ammunition together.

Whether it is in a locked safe or a separate room, keeping ammunition separate is crucial in maintaining the safety of yourself and those around you. Remember, responsible gun ownership includes proper storage and handling of both the firearm and its ammunition.

Educate Yourself and Others

One important rule is to continually educate yourself and others on properly using a gun. This includes learning about the different types of firearms, their components, and how to load and unload them safely.

Educating yourself and others on wearing the appropriate protective gear, such as helmets, when handling a gun is also essential. This added layer of precaution can protect against serious injuries and should always be implemented when handling a firearm. For quality protection, you can check out ACH helmets linked here.

Educating yourself and others on gun safety can help prevent accidents and promote responsible gun ownership.

Avoid Alcohol and Drugs

Individuals may become careless and make reckless decisions when under the influence, leading to potentially deadly consequences. It is essential to keep a clear mind and be in complete control when handling a gun. It is also important to note that alcohol and drugs can affect one’s ability to accurately aim and shoot, putting themselves and others at risk.

Understanding the Key Cardinal Rules of Gun Safety

The cardinal rules of shooting a gun safety are crucial to ensuring the well-being of both gun owners and those around them. By following these principles, we can work towards reducing the number of gun accidents and tragedies.

Remember, it only takes one moment to change a life forever. So, let’s all commit to practicing and promoting the cardinal rules of gun safety!

Gangnam Zombie (2023) Review

"Gangnam Zombie" Theatrical Poster

“Gangnam Zombie” Theatrical Poster

Director: Lee Soo-sung
Cast: Ji Il-joo, Park Ji-yeon, Choi Sung-min, Jo Kyung-hoon, Jung Yi-joo, Tak Teu-In, Song Yeon
Running Time: 80 min.

By Paul Bramhall

There’s a scene in Gangnam Zombie where the manager of a Youtuber agency pranks a staff member in an attempt to create content, and describes the video he’ll make from the footage as “What happens when a zombie attacks a backup for the national taekwondo team?” The concept of taekwondo versus zombies is admittedly a cool one, and indeed has already been done once before thanks to the 2014 short film High School of Zombie, which featured K-Tiger’s member Tae-mi unleashing against a wave of high school students turned blood thirsty killers. If anything the description of the prank could equally be applied to Gangnam Zombie as a whole, and it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken so long for a country like Korea to combine its flying kicks against the hordes of undead into a feature length movie.

In part that’s largely down to the success of 2016’s Train to Busan, which proved to be a winning formula by using the undead as a combination of visceral thrills and not so subtle social commentary. It’s a trend that’s continued through productions like its sequel Peninsula and #Alive, and when there have been variations its tended to either be to transpose the mayhem to a period setting (Rampant) or go the comedy route (The Odd Family: Zombie for Sale). Perhaps the Continue reading
