"Bangkok Revenge" Poster

John Foo, the stuntman/martial artist turned actor from Tony Jaa’s Tom Yum Goong (AKA The Protector) and the live-action Tekken movie, is back to headline his own feature film. This picture arrives from French director Jean-Marc Minéo but most of the dialogue appears to be in English. You can catch the trailer here.

It looks as though Bangkok Renaissance will offer enough fight scenes to satisfy us martial arts buffs, but it’s difficult to tell how strong the choreography is based on the brief flashes of action in the trailer.

The film opens in France on June 13, 2012. Let’s hope we hear about a release in English-speaking countries soon enough. Thanks to 24 Frames Per Second for the story.

"The Rocketeer" Japanese Theatrical Poster

Long before director Joe Johnston delivered pulp-y, World War II-era thrills with last year’s Captain America: The First Avenger, he explored much the same territory with his 1991 film The Rocketeer. That movie wasn’t exactly a hit for Disney but it has since developed a cult following thanks to Blu-ray, DVD, and, well, the internet. The story was based on the comic book by Dave Stevens and followed actor Bill Campbell as a test pilot turned jetpack-wearing hero.

Now comes word that Disney is heading back to the drawing board: the House of Mouse is currently meeting with writers to discuss a possible reboot of the property. It’s all in the theoretical stages but, who knows, the studio had some success with their Tron revival – maybe we’ll see a Rocketeer relaunch get the greenlight. In the meantime, catch up with the theatrical trailer for the original.

"End of Watch" Japanese Theatrical Poster

THE MOVIE: David Ayer – the award-winning writer of The Fast and the Furious, Training Day, Dark Blue, S.W.A.T., and writer/director of Street Kings and Harsh Times – is back with End of Watch. This time, Ayer is teaming up with Source Code’s Jake Gyllenhaal and World Trade Center’s Michael Pena to bring you another tale of cops, gangsters, drugs, money and firearms. Lots of ’em.

Judging from the trailer, End of Watch may be Ayer’s most action-oriented yet. Gyllenhaal and Peña play young Los Angeles police officers who try to make a name for themselves as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles. Somewhere along the line, they bark up the wrong tree and end up being on a hit list of some very notorious killers.

End of Watch also stars Up In The Air’s Anna Kendrick, Twelve’s Cody Horn and Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera.

"Lawless" Theatrical Poster

THE MOVIE: Lawless is the new film from director John Hillcoat, the acclaimed filmmaker behind The Road and The Proposition. This new endeavor is a bootleggin’ gangster picture set in Prohibition-era Virginia, featuring an all-star cast: Shia Lebeouf (Transformers), Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises), Jessica Chastain (Tree of Life), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential), Gary Oldman (Leon: The Professional), and Mia Wasikowska (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland).

"Stolen" Theatrical Poster

I couldn’t resist the play on words, but the headline to this post is far-fetched. It’s not like Taken was the first movie to revolve around a father – a skilled badass – who has to save his daughter from a bunch of assholes (remember Commando?).

Directed by The Expendables 2’s Simon West, Stolen stars Nicolas Cage as a former thief who frantically searches for his missing daughter. Turns out, she has been kidnapped and locked in the trunk of a taxi from some of his former crime partners. Now he has 12 hours to come up with $10 million dollars or his little girl is dead.

"Unstoppable" Japanese Theatrical Poster

Yesterday, news broke of Tony Scott’s tragic death. In order to celebrate the man’s life and work, we look back at some of his best films.

The Hunger (1983) – despite being known for his work in the action genre, Tony Scott got his start in horror – with this very-Eighties vampire tale co-starring David Bowie

Top Gun (1986) – perhaps Scott’s most endearing work, this movie helped launch Tom Cruise to super stardom

The Last Boy Scout (1991) – based on a script from “Lethal Weapon” scribe Shane Black, Tony Scott ended up creating one of the funniest and grittiest action flicks of the 90’s. Black’s dialogue and Scott’s direction seemed to bring out the best in lead actor Bruce Willis

True Romance (1993) – Tony Scott translated Quentin Tarantino’s script to the screen in a culturally-defining movies of the 90’s. Scene-stealing performances from the likes of Gary Oldman and Christopher Walken help color this violent but humorous crime thriller

Crimson Tide (1995) – this tense submarine film co-starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman is famous for its uncredited rewrites from Quentin Tarantino. The movie would also be the start of a fruitful partnership between Tony Scott and leading man Denzel

Man on Fire (2004) – this pitch-black revenge film reunited Tony Scott with Denzel Washington and signaled the beginning of a more visually experimental phase in Scott’s career

Unstoppable (2010) – another collaboration with Denzel Washington, Tony Scott’s last film was a crowd-pleasing thriller, based on the true story of a runaway train
