David Carradine’s classic TV show Kung Fu ( 1972-1975) is getting female-centric reboot from CW/Warner. The upcoming Kung Fu is being delivered straight-to-series after a planned pilot season was derailed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Development for Kung Fu comes from the Blindspot team that consists of writer-producer Christina M. Kim (Hawaii Five-0), creator-producer Martin Gero (Stargate: Atlantis), executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.

Headlining Kung Fu is Olivia Liang, who is perhaps best known for her recurring role in The CW series Legacies. Co-stars include Tzi Ma (Rapid Fire), Kheng Hua Tan (Crazy Rich Asians), Jon Prasida (Emo the Musical), Shannon Dang (Prison Logic) and Eddie Liu (Silicon Valley).

Here’s what you can expect from Kung Fu: A quarter-life crisis causes a young Chinese-American woman to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to find her hometown overrun with crime and corruption, she uses her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community and bring criminals to justice…all while searching for the assassin who killed her Shaolin mentor and is now targeting her (via Deadline).

Back in 2013, it was announced that the late Bill Paxton (Aliens) was attached to direct a big screen reboot of Kung Fu. Unfortunately, Paxton left the project (before his passing) for unknown reasons. Then it was announced that Australian director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) was in talks, but a deal never materialized (via THR).

Kung Fu will debut on April 7th. Until then, don’t miss the Trailer below:

  1. YM says:

Is there any chance this will be good? More specifically, is there any chance the action will be good? Anyone know? Is there someone with stuntmen or martial arts pedigree behind this? Don’t watch much CW but there were some good fights in Arrow.

    • Killer Meteor says:

I’m hoping at some point that Warners will finally release the original first season of the 70s show in 4:3!

  2. Mike Retter says:

More gay propaganda.. Embarrassing new show..
Why cant they come up with something new? We have a history of female martial arts stars, some of the best HK actioners ever made were female cop films..
But this is pure politics and not art. Its about rewriting the past to own the future.
The martial arts genre is mostly dead and this will just further press the pillow down on its face.

    • Shadow says:

      Agree!

    • Shadow says:

But sort of agree about “Best HK actioners ever made were female cop films”, of cource there was Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Khan, early HK Cynthia Rothrock, and some of their movies were great indeed, but call female cop movies, best of what HK action films can offer is simply wrong, there is no need to even put names here to understand this, but ok i will mention few, Chow Yun Fat “Killer” and “Hard Boiled”, is an simple example of that you are wrong.

      • Mike Retter says:

Thats not what I said, I said “SOME of the best HK actioners ever made were female cop films” …. SOME. Not sure why you had to trim the front of my quote off.

    • David says:

      Gay propaganda?

      • Mike Retter says:

Yes, Globohomo, go look it up.

        • ToryK says:

Can you seriously just fuck off? Go join the Stormfront forum or something.

COF, why isn’t this guy banned from posting? I love you guys and you run a great site, but I’m not cool with letting…”people” like this waste of space spew hateful nonsense.

        • ToryK says:

Ah, and of course after clicking on the guy’s name, I find out he’s a fan of an actual white supremacist. Why—am I not—surprised?

          • Mike Retter says:

What white supremacist? Now you are just making stuff up.

            • Benjamin M says:

A deflated Proud Boy desperately trying to show that his voice is still relevant, little knowing that it never was.

Either that, or he still has his knickers (I mean male gender specific underwear) in a twist over the pulled Scott Adkins piece that he was ranting & raving about over in the Max Cloud review.

              • Mike Retter says:

Never was a Proud Boy, never have been. In regards to this article about the reboot of Kung Fu as female, I have discussed the topic on its merits as I see it. You and the other guy/zir are making it all personal becuase you have no arguments.. And despite trying to make it personal, you are inaccurate each time with your attempted personal smears. Either bring an argument, or go home and take your puberty blockers.

                • Benjamin M says:

Thanks for the double confirmation, now I’m convinced.

Why don’t you take this “gay propaganda” discussion onto a podcast with your partner in crime Ben Shand, I’m sure you’ll find more of a receptive audience than you have here. Unless of course you’ve already done one.

                • ToryK says:

Problems with women, ties to a white supremacy, anti-gay slurs, and the cherry on top is that you’ve labeled this show as “gay propaganda”…simply because it stars a female? No, I think we’ve got you figured out, mate.

                  • Mike Retter says:

“Loves great female lead martial arts films and argues some of them are the among the best ever made, no ties with white supremacy whatsoever – infact is one an Asian movie website right now , labelled this show “gay” because its obviously gay (gay can also just mean crap as a popular adjective, but yeah its probably lesbian propaganda too) … Why are you even here? This is a place for action movie lovers, its a hetero genre, maybe there is a Sundance channel or DC/Marvel forum you can talk about the new stunning and brave bisexual Spiderman. (Spiderzir?)

                    • ToryK says:

Jesus, I’m talking to a child. There’s a history of bigots “excusing” specific minorities because they’re the “good ones”. I think that’s what’s happening with you, as far as women and Asian filmmakers go. I’m not even sure how to respond to respond to your use of the word “gay”, other than to repeat the fact that I’m talking to a child. I think I’ve already pinpointed why you’re a white supremacist (and you KNOW you are one.) And I’m here because I love Asian cinema. I just love cinema. Sundance has a decent selection, as well. They’re movies for adults, though – I’m not surprised you’d avoid movies written specifically for intelligent adults. The rest of your nonsense doesn’t deserve a response – your ignorance speaks for itself and I’ll let anyone with half a brain laugh at you without my help. I’m just embarrassed for you, at this point.

              • ToryK says:

                Thank you, Benjamin. 🍻

            • ToryK says:

Sam Hyde. That white supremacist. Or are you going to pretend someone else linked your name to that YouTube page?

      • ToryK says:

Screw him. I think he’s just got some deep-seeded issues, perhaps “gay thoughts” that always seem in danger of catching up to him. It’s 2021, and we still have knobs like this douche who get upset about what two consenting adults do in their own home.

        • Mike Retter says:

3% of the population are 40% of the pedophilia .. I’ll leave you to work out what 3% that is… And why I don’t want their agenda propagandized in populist genre cinema.

          • dakuan says:

for the other 60% i place my bet on catholic priests.

          • ToryK says:

There’s NO way I’m taking your biased stats for the truth. Unlike you, I’m comfortable enough being me that I don’t need to take it out an entire group of people because I find them “icky.” You’re conflating homosexuality with pedophilia, which not only means you’re a sick, hateful bigot, it leads me to question your intelligence and reasoning skills, as well.

            • Nikolai Hel says:

Hey, take all this leftist bullshit and go to eat shit, ok?

              • ToryK says:

Okay, but only if you share your recipes!

                • Nikolai Hel says:

I share with your mother, sissy moron.

                  • ToryK says:

Oh, you’re THAT guy. Yeah, she told me about you. Said she felt like she was cradle-robbing, because of how small he is. Wait, it wasn’t how small *he* was, it something *about* him that was small. I dunno, can’t remember. Whatever it was, she said it was the most embarrassing thing she’d ever witnessed. I felt kind of bad for the guy. What are the odds, bumping into you here of all places?

                    • Nikolai Hel says:

In other words: I’m your father and you’re a weak sissy because you’re mad for you can’t sit in the my leg and play with you. 🙂

                    • Nikolai Hel says:

And about size, maybe before me your mother was used to shag with donkeys.

                  • ToryK says:

“In other words: I’m your father and you’re a weak sissy because you’re mad for you can’t sit in the my leg and play with you.”

I’ve seen this before. My uncle didn’t take his meds once, his whole left side went numb, started talking just like that.

                    • Nikolai Hel says:

Yeah. And with the right side he stucked his right arm inside your asshole. 🙂

                      That’s why you’re a sissy leftist. 🙂

            • Mike Retter says:

The statistics dont lie. 3% of the population yet 40% of the pedophiles. Ask yourself why that is..

              • Killer Meteor says:

Speaking as a bisexual, I really do not care for seeing my gender orientation savagely attacked by Birch Barlow fanboys.

And what does any of this have to do with a lady being cast in the new Kung Fu series?

I’m dreading the comments when I review Showdown in Little Tokyo, I tell you that. Surely, we can all appreciate Dolph Lundgren in tiny black shorts…

                • Mike Retter says:

“Speaking as a bisexual” oh we should give you special treatment now, lets roll out the red carpet because you also like penis.. Oh poor victim of oppression, we shall now make Terminator gay for you to pay penance (oh wait, they already did..)

Lets all say your upcoming review of Showdown In Little Tokyo is stunning and brave because you like Dolph’s ass .. (great film BTW, one of my fav American martial arts flicks).. Listen buddy, stop acting like a victim. Straight hetero-normative culture can be criticized in public with no problems, so if you can take a dick you can take a joke. And if 40% of pedophiles come from just 3% of the population, don’t blame me, I’m just the messenger.

                • ToryK says:

I’m sorry you had you read that crap, dude. Seriously. 🍻

    • Killer Meteor says:

Mr Ho says relax…here’s a plane ticket…just go back home for a few years…ooh what rippling muscles…

  3. Aerosniff Someglue says:

Without me, it begins to make me angry.

USA should stop stealing other cultures (I haven’t seen the old show and I never will.

What about a biopic about Einstein with that guy being a woman? Beethoven as a person with tits (not talking about a fat man like me here)? Top gun with a girl having more balls than the entire navy? Gremlins with a young lesbian couple in a little town full of gayness?

It begins to look like propaganda (the same with a lot of movies with black people: of course they matter, but Latinos and Asians too…). Bye bye to that Hollywood.

“some of the best HK actioners ever made were female cop films”

    I don’t agree at all.

    • Mike Retter says:

What about the In The Line Of Duty series, you glue-sniffing freak?

      • Aerosniff Someglue says:

First, “C’est celui qui dit qu’il est” 😊, don’t begin with an insult if you don’t mind. Probably your education (or the lack of it) or your culture…

I won’t begin to lose my time with some body (yes, in two words) like you by establishing a list, you know you’re wrong. Let’s say the biggest female action Asian star NEVER has and never will reach(ed) 5% of the Asian and worldwide popularity of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Chow Yun-fat, the dead one,… And I’m not even talking about their filmography. Now get out of my sight.

        • Mike Retter says:

Hilarious! You are probably the most insulting person on here, so thanks for the ironic humor…

I didn’t say “the biggest”, I said “some of the best” .. And some of the best HK action films of the 80s were indeed female cop films.

I would argue Michelle Yeoh reached more than 5% of the success of Jackie Chan, not just with her work in Hong Kong but as Bond Girl in Tomorrow Never Dies and smash-hit Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon.

  4. Aerosniff Someglue says:

“I didn’t say “the biggest”, I said “some of the best” .. And some of the best HK action films of the 80s were indeed female cop films.”

No. Not a single one of them is as good/important/influencial as Police story, Project A, Prodigal son, The killer, Eastern condors, Shanghai express, A better tomorrow, A better tomorrow 2, Dragons forever, Pedicab driver, Long arm of the law, School on fire, Prison on fire, City on fire, Dangerous encounters first kind, The sword, The 8 diagram pole fighter, Martial arts of Shaolin, Duel to the death,…

“I would argue Michelle Yeoh reached more than 5% of the success of Jackie Chan, not just with her work in Hong Kong but as Bond Girl in Tomorrow Never Dies and smash-hit Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon.”

    OK. 5,5%.

P.S.: She was JUST a Bond girl (the best ever), not THE star.

    P.S.2: Magnificent warriors rules, 100% dumb n’ fun/100% kick-ass action.

    • Mike Retter says:

So are Royal Warriors and Yes Madam. I think Michelle Yeoh’s smashing through that window pane and flipping those two guys through the balcony is one of the most dynamic action moves ever filmed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcCqqr-LgTY

As Bond girl in a very successful film, thats more successful than any attempts by Jackie Chan in Hollywood. Unless Rush Hour is bigger than I think its is.. BTW, Chris Tucker gets paid more than Jackie for those films, can you believe that?

But any one of the great women being as big as the male stars is not the point.. All I said was some of these films are among the greatest action films ever made.. And that its also the existence the sub-genre itself that Im applauding, that they were able to get so much good millage out of it, without it getting old or tired.. Men will always dominate this genre, because the audience is male and they want heroes to look up to and emulate.. That’s why I think the female-cop sub-genre was ingenious, because rather than taking everyday women and turning them into unrealistic folk-heroes, they were police officers, naturally put in harms way. It was the perfect scaffold for a unique and inventive take on chop-socky, because female bodies are different. 1) there is a stronger implied element of danger for them 2) they have certain flexibility and different choreography suited to them, which did breath new life into this kind of filmmaking. Perhaps there was some kind of political element or subtext, but it was first and foremost a legitimately exciting new direction for the genre with new kinds of action being explored. This cannot be said for almost any of the American attempts at this (apart from some exceptions like Alien and the first two Terminators) .. Because they are usually political statement first, lets write a script to justify this politics second. The inspiration isn’t visual, but political.

  5. Scott Robinson says:

What the hell am I reading here? I disappear for a month and have to come back to this? Last time I was at cityonfire.com, the biggest argument was over Bruce Lee beating up brad Pitt or something like that, now it’s skinheads and homophobes?

    • Killer Meteor says:

You see 40+ comments on a thread about “Kung Fu” and assume it’s just people moaning that Bruce didn’t play Caine…

    • Mike Retter says:

Not skinheads or homophobes, but SJWs, communists, trannie and bisexual thought police – who frankly have no business telling red-blooded men how their genre should be.

      • ToryK says:

Well, it’s not had becoming boring anymore. You’ve got me there. I don’t think you’ll be posting here much longer anyway, so it may have all been for naught.

        • Mike Retter says:

Why will I not be posting? What have I doe wrong? Are you using some kind of minority privilege to have my COF account closed down? Is that what you do when people don’t support your agenda?

    • Mike Retter says:

I heard COF had becoming boring, so I got the message that I had to make the comment section more interesting than the articles. And I delivered.

  6. ToryK says:

Also, buzzwords are nice, but you need-emotional-content. Can you think for yourself? Can you honestly give anyone a good reason why being a “gay trannie [sic]” is a bad thing? (I mean, other than the pseudoscience of gay folks being pedophiles.) Can you explain why my acceptance of people who aren’t like myself is wrong, and why your irrational fear of them (because that’s what it is – fear) is right? Why my condemnation of your stupidity – your backwards, outdated, knuckle-dragging, soon-to-be-extinct-because-no-one-will-want-to-mate-with-your-close-minded-offspring-stupidity – is wrong? I don’t think you can. I think all you can do is spew out more bullshit you’ve heard on some attention-seeking cryptkeeper’s radio show. It was never your genre to begin with. Bruce Lee, one of the idols on the Mt. Rushmore of martial arts cinema, would be ashamed of you. He’d ask you why you were even a fan. “No dogs or Chinese allowed.” That’s you, doofus. He was fighting you.

    • Mike Retter says:

I didn’t realise Bruce Lee was fighting for the gay, lesbian, transsexual, intersex, bisexual agenda. Thanks for educating me!

Can I think for myself? Your messages are so painfully woke, its almost like you posted your replies by reading my comments to your Amazon Echo or Google Nest and let it reply for you.

Its not pseudo-science to say 3% of the population do 40% of the pedophilia. And thus its not insane to observe replacing traditional heroes with gay/trans “thems” as being utterly subversive. There was no mass-public desire for this, this was not organic change, this imposed on ordinary people by elites.

To go deeper, this is probably all part of “the great reset”.. Which is a multi-front Orwellian revolution being imposed upon humanity by a group of corporations and oligarchs who came together twenty years ago because they thought they could do a better job of Government that democratically elected or popular-backed ones.

  7. Mike Retter says:

I just thought it was important to comment and bring this thread to the magic number 60 .. No, you crazy leftists or perverts, I don’t mean “666”, so don’t get too excited..

Its been an interesting window into modern thinking, that the rise of the LGBTQ agenda correlates so strongly with the decline of the genre itself. Just as people fake being certain genders because of whatever feelings they have in their head, we also fake genres with the CGI on our screens … Manlets like Tom Cruise are our action heroes… 80s twiggy airheads famous for saying “whoah” are our lone-wolf hitmen … And every classic is remade as either female, gay or both … The world is upside down …

People knew in the Soviet Union that when an old picture of Stalin was re-released with former collaborators airbrushed out of the picture because they had been executed, that these images were fake … That the whole system was fake … And that’s how many feel now about the modern inversion of heroic cinema.

So in short, when action heroism is finally restored as imagery we can trust, so will reality be restored to the state of logos or divine reason. In-fact, I think those two things will happen in reverse order.

  8. cuttermaran says:

That looks pretty decent in my opinion. But why is this a remake of that old Kung-Fu show? Isn’t the whole spin of the idea having a Kung-Fu wanderer in the Western setting?
None of this is present here, looks more like another show for a teenange audiance. Seriously, that’s not worth all the fuss.

  9. Anyone coming across these comments for the first time would think this is a post for ‘Let the Right One In’ rather than a ‘Kung Fu’ reboot.

    • Mike Retter says:

Why “Let The Right One In”?

      • ToryK says:

It’s got one of those “fake girls” you hate so much.

        • Mike Retter says:

Maybe its told from the Asian-American perspective and they spend all their time defending Asian families from black violence.. Blacks being 13% of the population, yet doing more than 60% of the violent crime against Asians.

          • ToryK says:

Maybe it will! You’ve got quite the decision on your hands, if so. Do you ignore it due to your fear of vagina, or do you sink to immeasurably low levels and actually watch a woman do Fu? 50/50, I suppose. But it would be *dark* heads she’s cracking, so maybe it’s more like 60/40. Luckily (well, it’s not really luck, just a bit of common sense and intelligence), I’m no bigot, so I don’t have to make these choices.

            • Mike Retter says:

You are an idiot, Iv stated in great detail I have liked many female starring action films. But I like things on merit and I don’t like the Marxist politicization of action cinema. Classical storytelling should be deeply rooted is wisdom, not your penis-chopping, kids on puberty blockers, banning words from the dictionary, Kalergi-plan BS.

          • ToryK says:

BUT…but, remember, folks, Mike’s not a white supremacist. He’s not. Being racist doesn’t make one a racist.

          • ToryK says:

I do have a question, though. It’s a legit question – I’m not being a smartass or anything, I just have a question, adult-to-adult. Why are racists ashamed of or embarrassed about being racist? Racism is a philosophy and a thought process, it’s something one believes in. When I believe in something, and I mean genuinely believe in it, I’m never ashamed. Why would I be when I’m the one holding the beliefs? If they’re mine, surely I think they’re true. Racists will deny their beliefs in public, though, and it’s never made sense to me. So, if that’s your philosophy, and you feel it to be true, why would you be iffy about being associated with a white supremacist? Again, I’m not being a smartass, I’m genuinely curious.

            • Mike Retter says:

I don’t believe in the word “racist”. I think its just leftist language. People can be discerning in regards to individuals just as they can about large groups of people. The latter is just pattern recognition and its vital for the survival and wise choices of anybody and any group. “Racism” was just something invented by Trotsky to control people and enact the worst genocide the world has ever seen. So I reject the terminology, its just a leftist way of framing a debate and controlling language. Either everyone is racist or nobody is racist. Because everyone is discerning, can see patterns and form statistical views of the world.

  10. Big Mike Leeder says:

Wow so a female reboot of KUNG FU gets such a reacrion, damn i guess Netflix announcement of a “male’ version of SHE’S ALL THAT as HE”S ALL THAT is gonna also be destroying the original and cause for endless talk about male driven movies or TV being some kind of strange agenda?

Its a completely new take on KUNG FU, and probably the weakest aspect is calling it KUNG FU as its so not just a female reboot…. i do have to say that when they first announced it, i liked the idea of a female take on things, a Chinese woman, stranger in strange land trying to find her way

    • ToryK says:

I was actually kind of surprised by the trailer, myself. My one complaint, much like yours, is that it’s a “Kung Fu” reboot. I get that IP’s are supposed to make you more money, but this looks to have moved away from the original concept enough that I’d want to call it something else, personally. But yeah, happily surprised by what I saw.

  11. Aerosniff Someglue says:

Dude, you’re so right. Michelle Yeoh has had a Hollywood career ten times more successful than Jackie Chan (🤣).

And in Hong Kong, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-fat, Stephen Chow, Andy Lau and Co were NOTHING compared to the mighty Michelle Yeoh (🤭).

And Royal warriors and Yes madam are not only 1000 times better than forgotten crap like Drunken master, Police story, Project A or Dragons forever but are forever more influencial and known than those pitiful Chan movies. By the way, Michelle Yeoh got ten times what Jackie earned for Police story 3 and much more than what Chow Yun-fat got for Crouching tiger hiden dragon (I’m not even talking about Jet Li’s Tai-chi master). Can you believe that?

And Jackie Chan didn’t play a Chris Tucker girl in those (bad) Rush hour flicks.

And I think people bought tickets more for “James Bond” and Jackie Chan than for Michelle Yeoh.

Forgot also his (small) voice work in the Kung fu panda trilogy.

And in China, well, Kung fu yoga (about 250 M$), even though Jackie’s almost dead there. Plus Dragon blade (about 120 M$,) Police story lockdown (about 80 M$), Chinese zodiac (about 150 M$), Railroad tigers (about 100 M$), Skiptrace (about 120 M$).
