Back in 2014, Variety reported that video game developer Sega hired film director/producer, Evan Cholfin (The Garlock Incident), to adapt a number of video game titles into live-action and animated movies. Some of the titles potential titles included Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Rise of Nightmares and Crazy Taxi.
“With his impeccable taste and experience developing and producing entertainment in nearly every format imaginable, Evan is the unique executive to revitalize and canonize our partners’ brands by working with Hollywood to create stories that will last for centuries,” said Stories president and CEO Tomoya Suzuki, who will help oversee the projects.
Today, we’ve received conflicting word (via Collider) that producer Marc Platt (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and his production company Marc Platt Productions have teamed up with Stories International, Inc. – the production division of SEGA Group and Hakuhodo DY Group – to adapt the high-priority Shinobi franchise as a feature film.
“We love the Shinobi games and believe that the world of ninjas has never been properly explored onscreen. We now have the opportunity to do just that. With Shinobi, we hope to make a film that honors the essence of the games and brings this fascinating world to life for moviegoing audiences,” Platt explained.
Whether it be Cholfin or Platt, one thing still stands: we’d love to see Joe “Shinobi” Musashi on the big screen. Stay tuned!
Makes me wonder if they’ll resuscitate that Crazy Taxi movie Richard Donner tried to adapt. http://www.cityonfire.com/live-action-films-of-segas-streets-of-rage-and-shinobi-in-the-works/#respond
Streets of Rage movie! I’ve been wanting this to happen since I was 10 years old! I’ve already come out with my idea for an ideal cast:
Axel Stone: Scott Adkins
Blaze Fielding: Gina Carano (or maybe Maggie Q)
Adam Hunter: Michael Jai White
Mr X: Dolph Lungren
Either Matt Mullins or Scott Adkins would be good choices as Axel Stone. Gina Carano would make a excellent Blaze, too.
I’m actually surprised they’re even doing this. But I guess with the right writers (i.e. Marvel), you can take any foundation and turn it into gold.
Unless you get Uwe Boll. XP
Don’t knock on Uwe, man. That guy has been making some decent films lately. Check out RAMPAGE and ATTACK ON WALL STREET. They’re pretty good. Now, his video game movies suck.
I would love to see a beat-em-up like Steets of Rage or Final Fight turned into a solid martial arts/action movie.
But then I remember they tried that with Double Dragon and the results were…well, the less said about that, the better.
Just make sure it’s actually Joe Musashi, and not rewritten as Joe Mustang for ‘recasting purposes’. =p
This is great news. We definitely need more ninjas around these days. I have a feeling we may see another craze like the 80s some day. I’m surprised crapwood hasn’t exploited the hell out of it already…..like any day I expect to hear they’ll be remaking Revenge of the Ninja. Lol.
I think my ideas for the Streets Of Rage movie will be a good thing as long as you get the right cast and as for Shinobi it needs to be done properly to follow the games.
I would hope that it would follow the original arcade game more. The recent games would make it yet another tired period-fantasy film.
I am a huge, huge, huge shinobi fan. I have loved this game as a kid and along with Playstation’s Tenchu, think that this is the best Ninja game ever!!! I sincerely hope that they base this game on real Ninjutsu with authentic Ninjutsu techniques, with real Ninja weapons and real Ninjutsu techniques. Just like Revenge of the Ninja (Sho Kosugi). They must use real Ninja experts. Sho Kosugi is a real Ninja expert, that is why Revenge of the Ninja is still such a huge success.
